Abstract

Contemporary museums are no longer limited merely to their traditional functions of preserving and exhibiting tangible and intangible heritage. They function as a spatial, social, and experiential structure. The act of exhibiting evolved into a practice that forms perception, interaction, and collective memory, while museums themselves transformed from enclosed institutions into urban actors embedded in everyday life. The evolution of museums also shaped the museum space, and it is no longer confined solely to their exhibition spaces. The boundaries of museum space expanded together with their evolution. Today, its boundaries include physical environments from exhibition spaces to the museum building itself, to its immediate surroundings. Today, its physical boundaries include the totality of environments from exhibition spaces to the museum building itself, to its immediate surroundings. Museum architecture has always been influenced by the evolution of museums, while simultaneously shaping and supporting this evolution. This thesis investigates how architectural design decisions can respond to this evolving role through constructing a holistic framework that integrates spatial experience, community engagement, brand identity, and urban presence for contemporary museums. Based on characteristics of contemporary museums, the design phase proposes various interventions to create a multi-layered experience, cultural brand identity, and public engagement for Cermodern Modern Art Museum in Ankara, Türkiye This thesis is structured into two main chapters.
