Progettare per innesti II : dalla secolarizzazione alla rifunzionalizzazione degli edifici sacri: il caso della Chiesa di Santa Maria della Visitazione

The thesis project builds upon the research path initiated in the bachelor’s thesis “Progettare per innesti: Architettura tra antico e nuovo a Venezia”. That earlier work investigated the relationship between historic fabric and contemporary intervention. It first examined the major theoretical positions that have shaped this debate over time, then outlined and classified the different design strategies that can be adopted, and finally analyzed selected case studies to clarify the concrete issues that inevitably arise when working within an existing architectural context. Drawing on the awareness developed through this initial research, the present thesis advances the discussion by addressing a widely debated issue: the large number of closed and underused churches in Venice. If reactivated and reopened to the public, these spaces could once again become valuable assets for the city. The project focuses on the Chiesa di Santa Maria della Visitazione, owned by the Fondazione Don Orione Artigianelli and currently used only occasionally for artistic events. Through this case study, the thesis explores new ways of inhabiting and reinterpreting the space, reaffirming the idea that a building’s life does not simply come to an end, but can continue to evolve over time—adapting to new needs and scenarios while remaining rooted in its history.

Il progetto di tesi compie un ulteriore passo rispetto al cammino precedentemente iniziato con la tesi triennale “Progettare per innesti: Architettura tra antico e nuovo a Venezia”. La ricerca svolta analizzava il tema del “rapporto tra l’antico e il nuovo, tra preesistenza e intervento”, interessandosi dapprima riguardo le correnti di pensiero susseguitesi nel corso della storia, poi cercando di identificare e categorizzare le svariate modalità che si possono attuare e in seguito analizzando nel concreto alcuni casi emblematici, per individuare quali siano nell’effettivo gli aspetti con cui necessariamente ci si deve interfacciare in un progetto di questo tipo. Con la sensibilità acquisita tramite questo primo percorso di ricerca, il progetto di tesi aggiunge un ulteriore tassello, immergendosi in un argomento già fortemente dibattuto, ossia quello delle chiese chiuse e inutilizzate, le quali a Venezia si trovano in grande quantità ma che potrebbero, se riaperte al pubblico, rappresentare in grande valore per la città. Identificata la Chiesa di Santa Maria della Visitazione, proprietà della Fondazione Don Orione Artigianelli che la impiega sporadicamente per eventi artistici, il progetto sperimenta nuove modalità di utilizzo dello spazio, dimostrando ancora una volta che la vita di un edificio non è destinata a concludersi ma ad evolvere con il passare del tempo, per abbracciare nuove esigenze e nuovi scenari, senza dimenticarsi delle proprie origini.
