Dare forma all'ascolto: l'art toy come linguaggio comunicativo dell'esperienza musicale

This thesis investigates the art toy as a communicative language capable of translating and making shareable the musical listening experience, understood not as a simple act of hearing but as an emotional, embodied, and temporal phenomenon. Within the scope of this research, the art toy is interpreted not as a purely playful or collectible object, but as a narrative and relational artifact, able to convey meanings, emotions, and identities through form. The research phase analyzes the art toy phenomenon from an interdisciplinary perspective, exploring the dynamics of collecting, the principles of emotional design, and the role of emotions in the relationship between object and user. This theoretical framework highlights the potential of the art toy as a communicative medium capable of fostering affective bonds and shared systems of meaning. On this basis, the project LUU - Listening Moments is developed as a modular system of objects that, through the combination of the two elements that make up the toy: body and soul, represents different emotional states and moments of musical listening. Each configuration becomes a form of non-verbal language, designed to make an immaterial and personal experience tangible. The thesis thus proposes a design approach focused on the construction of embodied experiences, in which the object acts as an interpretive medium between the individual and music, expanding the role of the art toy within contemporary product design.

Questa tesi indaga l’art toy come linguaggio comunicativo capace di tradurre e rendere condivisibile l’esperienza musicale, intesa non come semplice atto di ascolto, ma come fenomeno emotivo, corporeo e temporale. Nel contesto della ricerca, l’art toy viene interpretato non come oggetto ludico o collezionabile fine a sé stesso, ma come artefatto narrativo e relazionale, in grado di veicolare significati, emozioni e identità attraverso la forma. La fase di ricerca analizza il fenomeno degli art toys da una prospettiva interdisciplinare, approfondendo le dinamiche del collezionismo, i principi dell’emotional design e il ruolo delle emozioni nella relazione tra oggetto e utente. Questo percorso teorico consente di evidenziare il potenziale dell’art toy come mezzo comunicativo capace di costruire legami affettivi e sistemi di senso condivisi. Su queste basi si sviluppa il progetto LUU - Listening Moments, un sistema modulare di oggetti che, attraverso la combinazione dei due elementi che compongono il toy: corpo e anima, rappresenta differenti stati emotivi e momenti di ascolto musicale. Ogni configurazione diventa una forma di linguaggio non verbale, pensata per rendere tangibile un’esperienza immateriale e personale. La tesi propone così un approccio al design orientato alla costruzione di esperienze incarnate, in cui l’oggetto agisce come medium interpretativo tra individuo e musica, ampliando il ruolo dell’art toy all’interno del progetto di prodotto contemporaneo.
