This study proposes intermediate territories as a crucial analytical category for understanding contemporary territorial dynamics in Southern Europe, building a methodological and comparative bridge. Starting from Arturo Lanzani’s theoretical framework on “Italia di mezzo”, the research adapts and applies this interpretative model to the Spanish context, with a focus on the polycentric system of the Camp de Tarragona. Through the analysis of socioeconomic data (Eurostat, INE) and national and regional strategic plans, the study decodes the specificities of these hybrid areas, suspended between metropolitan polarities and rural fragilities. The Catalan case of the Tarragona-Reus-Valls triangle emerges as an exemplary laboratory, where residual infrastructural spaces, known as “entrevías,” are being reconfigured by territorial planning from fragmented elements to new strategic centralities. These places prove crucial for experimenting with the integration of production, logistics, and environmental functions. The research concludes by highlighting the paradigmatic value of the Spanish approach, characterized by integrated multilevel governance, as a benchmark for the regeneration of Italy’s intermediate territories, often plagued by fragmented policies. The “zonas intermedias” thus confirm themselves not as residual entities, but as key players in polycentric, sustainable, and cohesive development, offering a replicable model for the redevelopment of intermediate areas across Europe.

Abstract
The “zonas intermedias” thus confirm themselves not as residual entities, but as key players in polycentric, sustainable, and cohesive development, offering a replicable model for the redevelopment of intermediate areas across Europe.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
