Re-dialogue : Verona meets the Roman Theatre again

“Re-Dialogue, Verona meets the Roman Theatre again” is a design proposal that aims to bring the Roman Theatre of Verona back to light by creating a new dialogue that has been denied to the city for almost a century. The project begins with a historical analysis of the archaeological site and then mainly develops along Via delle Regaste, focusing on three main elements: the entrance, the scene and the stage. The main idea behind the design is to restore a connection with the city through poetic gestures in a historical site of great value, which has been strongly fenced off and hidden from the eyes of residents and tourists. The project is presented as a sequence of images that guide visitors from Ponte Pietra along the street. In the distance, they are attracted by a temporary summer interpretation of the theatre’s façade. This structure appears and disappears, with a system of small blades that move with the wind and reflect the movement of the river, an essential element for the city and historically connected to the theatre. Before reaching this large structure, visitors find on the left a wide roof that creates a deep shadow, almost pressing down on them. This shadow defines the new entrance to the archaeological museum and to the theatrical events inside the site. The project also includes a new stage designed to ensure flexibility, with dressing rooms and technical areas carefully distributed around it. This large entrance creates a new central point, restoring the flow of spaces and forming a new external square that visually becomes one with the covered space and the theatre itself. The proposed project is therefore an attempt to analyse the current situation and to restore the dialogue between the city and the theatre that has been interrupted over time, through the poetic use of new architectural elements that speak to people, to the city, and to the theatre itself.

“Re-Dialogue, Verona meets the Roman Theatre again” è un tentativo progettuale di riportare alla luce il teatro romano di Verona attraverso la progettazione di un nuovo dialogo che ormai da un secolo è stato proibito alla città. Il progetto inizia dall’analisi storica del sito archeologico per andare a svilupparsi principalmente su via delle Regaste, ponendo il focus principalmente su tre elementi: l’ingresso, la scena e il palco. Alla base della progettazione persiste l’idea di ridare una connessione con la città attraverso gesti poetici in un sito storico di valore inestimabile ma brutalmente recintato e coperto agli occhi della popolazione in primis e in secondo piano dei turisti. Il progetto è una sequenza di immagini che da Ponte Pietra accompagnano il visitatore sulla via, attratti in lontananza da un’interpretazione estiva e smontabile della facciata del teatro, che appare e svanisce con su di essa un sistema di piccole lamelle che mosse dal vento replicano il movimento del fiume, elemento essenziale per la città e storicamente simbolo legato al teatro. Prima di raggiungere questa grande struttura si incontra sulla sinistra una grande copertura che schiaccia il visitatore in una profonda ombra che definisce il nuovo ingresso del museo archeologico e degli eventi teatrali all’interno del sito archeologico, incrementati attraverso la progettazione di un nuovo palcoscenico in grado di garantire flessibilità, distribuendo così anche camerini e zone tecniche. questo grande ingresso crea una centralità ricostituendo il flusso degli spazi e una nuova piazza esterna che visivamente diventa un tutt'uno con lo spazio coperto e il teatro stesso. Il progetto proposto quindi si inserisce come tentativo di analisi della situazione attuale per provare poi a risolvere questo dialogo reciso nel tempo tra la città e il teatro attraverso la poeticità di nuovi elementi che parlano all’uomo, alla città e al teatro stesso.
