The environmental degradation of tyres, particularly due to ozone-induced cracking, represents a significant challenge for vehicle safety. Traditional methods for evaluating such damage often rely on manual inspection or basic image processing techniques, which are prone to operator subjectivity and lack of repeatability. This thesis proposes an automated and objective non destructive methodology for the experimental assessment of tyre surface cracking using advanced Computer Vision and Deep Learning techniques. The core of the work focuses on the transition from traditional local thresholding algorithms to a semantic segmentation approach based on a U-Net architecture with Attention Gates. This model was trained on a custom dataset to identify and quantify cracks under varying ageing conditions. The performance of the proposed neural network was evaluated against traditional thresholding method. The results demonstrate a significant improvement in detection accuracy, with the U-Net achieving an F1-score of 0.82 and a Mean Intersection over Union (mIoU) of 0.85, effectively reducing background noise and improving the detection of cracks. A number of global and morphological indicators were defined to comprehensively measure the cracking-related damage. An uncertainty analysis was performed to validate the reliability of the measurement system. The study concludes that the integration of Deep Learning into the measurement chain not only automates the diagnostic process but also provides a more accurate and precise method for assessing tyre structural integrity.

Abstract
The study concludes that the integration of Deep Learning into the measurement chain not only automates the diagnostic process but also provides a more accurate and precise method for assessing tyre structural integrity.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
