Architecture of the stage space: analysis and restoration of the fly tower at the Magenta Opera House

This thesis aims to study and analyse the fly tower of the Opera House of Magenta, with the objective of developing a proposal for its restoration and adaptive reuse. The Opera House, inaugurated in 1904 thanks to the strong involvement of the local community and its passion for music, was originally conceived as an Italian-style theatre, inspired by the model of La Scala in Milan. Over time, however, the building underwent transformations that changed its function into a cinema-theatre. These interventions had significant consequences for the fly tower, which was reduced in scale through the construction of a new grid, leading to the abandonment of the original one. The thesis therefore seeks to provide an in-depth understanding of the historic building and the functioning of its stage machinery. The research begins with an initial phase of background knowledge focused on the analysis of case studies related to stage space, and then proceeds to approach the Teatro Lirico through the study of its history and the analysis of geometric surveys, material investigations, and its state of conservation. This process of knowledge acquisition makes it possible to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the case study and the issues connected to it, laying the necessary foundations for a design intervention that is respectful, distinguishable, and authentic, capable of engaging in dialogue with the history and identity of the Opera House of Magenta.

La seguente tesi si propone di studiare e analizzare la torre scenica del Teatro Lirico di Magenta, con l’obiettivo di elaborare una proposta di intervento di restauro e rifunzionalizzazione. Il Teatro Lirico, inaugurato nel 1904 grazie alla forte partecipazione e all’amore dei cittadini per la musica, nasce come teatro all’italiana, ispirato al modello de La Scala di Milano. Nel corso del tempo, tuttavia, l’edificio è stato oggetto di trasformazioni che ne hanno modificato la destinazione d’uso in cinema-teatro. Tali interventi hanno avuto conseguenze significative sulla torre scenica, ridimensionata attraverso la realizzazione di una nuova graticcia, determinando l’abbandono di quella originaria. La tesi intende quindi offrire un percorso di conoscenza approfondita dell’edificio storico e del funzionamento del macchinario scenico. Il lavoro prende avvio con una prima fase di “background knowledge” focalizzata sull’analisi di casi studio relativi allo spazio scenico, per poi andare ad approfondire la conoscenza del Teatro Lirico attraverso lo studio della storia dell’edificio e l’analisi dei rilievi geometrici, materici e dello stato di degrado. Questo processo conoscitivo consente di acquisire una comprensione completa del caso studio e dei temi ad esso connessi, ponendo le basi necessarie per un intervento progettuale rispettoso, riconoscibile e autentico, in grado di dialogare con la storia e l’identità del Teatro Lirico di Magenta.
