Abstract
Located in Sesto San Giovanni, Area Falck was once the beating heart of European steel production and a geographically crucial node in the Milan metropolitan area. Today, however, it stands as a massive urban void—a segregated enclave severed from the surrounding city fabric by infrastructural barriers and a heavy legacy of severe soil contamination. To heal this scarred landscape, this project proposes a dual-pronged ecological strategy: Cut-and-Fill earthworks to safely manage, contour, and cap polluted topsoils, combined with Phytoremediation utilizing hyperaccumulator plants to actively extract heavy metals. These technical methodologies have been systematized into a comprehensive "Remediation Handbook," offering a scalable toolkit for post-industrial ecological restoration. Building upon this resilient ecological baseline, the masterplan introduces a poetic spatial narrative: "The Threefold Echoes." Inspired by Yangguan Sandie, a masterpiece of ancient Chinese poetry and Guqin music that embodies the profound emotion of parting, the design orchestrates a dignified farewell to the roaring industrial era. Descrizione: The exhibition panels showcase the paradigm shift in post-industrial landscape architecture. They aim to explore how landscape can transform the polluted and isolated state of an area into a vibrant new green space. Our design is inspired by the ancient Chinese guqin piece "The threefold echoes"—a solemn and poetic farewell to the noisy industrial era. The theme of our design is a spatial symphony about parting, healing, and rebirth.

Descrizione: This thesis, “Area Falck: From Isolation to Symbiosis,” explores the regeneration of a former steel industrial brownfield in Sesto San Giovanni, Milan. Through multi-scalar research and spatial diagnosis, the project identifies contamination, fragmentation, and heritage loss as key challenges. It proposes a 70-year landscape-led strategy integrating soil remediation, phytoremediation, ecological corridors, and adaptive reuse of industrial heritage. By combining engineered safety systems with layered vegetation and public space design, the project transforms a polluted enclave into a resilient urban forest, reconnecting ecological networks, community life, and industrial memory.
