The thesis examines the role of Communication Design in mediating the study of Japanese for Italian-speaking adults. It focuses on a user group often engaged in work activities, with time and attendance constraints that affect access to education and training. Starting from the linguistic and graphic system of Japanese, the research investigates how this system is currently communicated, organized, and made accessible in Italian, exploring methods, environments, and learning tools commonly used by adult learners. The work is structured around a theoretical analysis of the structural characteristics of the language and the main established approaches in language pedagogy, complemented by a critical survey of the current educational offer, including institutional courses, textbooks, applications, online platforms, immersive technologies, and periods of residence in Japan. A central role in the analysis is played by an exploratory empirical study, based on a survey administered online to Italian-speaking adult learners and on interviews with teachers. The analysis of the collected data highlights ways in which different tools are integrated and the personal adaptation strategies adopted by learners to manage the linguistic and cultural system of Japanese. Overall, the findings reveal a fragmented landscape of educational provision and limited design integration, which at times makes the structural, pragmatic, and cultural relationships of the language less visible. In this context, Communication Design emerges as a useful tool for interpreting these critical issues and guiding potential future developments.
