A common place: new public spaces and collective living in the center of Turin

During the last century there has been a shift in the act of inhabiting, which seems to have moved away from its primary role as the fundamental driver of the social relationship, and it has been reduce to an economic asset. The value of houses doesn’t reside anymore in their qualities as spaces able to support the growth of people and their comunities, rather it is tied to the land which they are built on, and its spatial relation of proximity to the productive facilities and places of consumption. There are many reasons that can be pointed at as the catalysts of this change, from politcal agendas to private interests, but the consequences of these actions can now be seen daily and are reflected in the way cities are lived and inhabited. The opportunity to access to adequate spaces for living, both in the form of private and communal life, and social fragmentation are problems that are growing steadily. Building upon these premises, the project aims to address the challenge proposed during the 2023 competition which saw the Sant’Eligio block as the protagonist of a process of tranformation, with the main goal of repurposing the now being park lot, into a mix of new uses, both private, in the form of social houses, and shared functions. By designing spaces with different degrees of publicness, in order to promote the creation of a strong relationship between the physical space and the people who will live in, between and through them, it’s reasonable to believe in the settlement and growth of a social life and communities. The proposal seeks to reach these objective through the design of spaces that are open to embrace different ways of living. Flexible dwellings that can accomodate a moltitude of inhabitants with different needs, lifestyle and social backgrounds, also open to future possibilities that maya rise alter. Beyond the domestic sphere, the project integrates a network of common and public spaces designed to serve both the residents and the wider neighborhood. Ultimately, the intervention aims to generate a collective belonging, ensuring that the the block becomes a place of shared life and renewed social interaction.

Nel corso dell'ultimo secolo è possibile notare un cambiamento nelle modalità dell’abitare, che sembra essersi allontanato dal suo ruolo primario di motore fondamentale delle relazioni sociali, riducendosi a un bene economico. Il valore degli immobili non risiede più nelle loro qualità di spazi in grado di sostenere la crescita delle persone e delle loro comunità, ma è legato al terreno su cui sorgono e alla loro relazione spaziale di vicinanza agli impianti produttivi e ai luoghi di consumo. Sono molte le ragioni alla base di questo cambiamento, dalle politiche intraprese negli anni agli interessi dei privati, ma le conseguenze di queste azioni sono visibili quotidianamente e si riflettono nel modo in cui le città sono vissute e abitate. L'opportunità di accedere a spazi adeguati alla vita, sia privata che comunitaria, e la frammentazione sociale sono problemi in costante crescita. Partendo da queste premesse, il progetto mira ad affrontare la sfida proposta durante il concorso del 2023 che ha visto l’isolato Sant'Eligio, a Torino, protagonista di un processo di trasformazione, con l'obiettivo principale di rifunzionalizzare l'attuale parcheggio, trasformandolo in un mix di nuovi usi, sia privati, sotto forma di alloggi sociali, sia condivisi. Fornendo spazi con diversi gradi di “publicness”, al fine di promuovere la creazione di un forte legame tra lo spazio fisico e le persone che vi abiteranno, tra loro e attraverso di essi, è possibile l'insediamento e la crescita di una vita sociale e di comunità. La proposta cerca di raggiungere questi obiettivi attraverso la progettazione di spazi aperti ad accogliere diversi modi di vivere. Abitazioni flessibili in grado di ospitare una moltitudine di abitanti con esigenze, stili di vita e background sociali diversi, aperte anche ai cambiamenti che potranno avvenire nel futuro. Al di là della sfera domestica, il progetto integra una rete di spazi comuni e pubblici progettati per servire sia i residenti che il quartiere in generale. L'intervento mira, dunque, a generare un senso di appartenenza collettiva, garantendo che il quartiere diventi un luogo di vita condivisa e di rinnovata interazione sociale.
