This work investigates the in-plane tensile failure of plain-weave Aramid Fiber Reinforced Plastic (AFRP) plies through a micro–macro homogenization approach based on a Representative Volume Element (RVE). The study is motivated by the need to improve the accuracy of failure predictions in Finite Element simulations of ballistic impact tests on Fiber Metal Laminates (FMLs), where the 2D Hashin criterion, originally formulated for unidirectional composites, is normally used. An RVE representing the ply of AFRP composite was modeled in Abaqus®, decomposing the composite into its two distinct homogeneous constituents, each with its corresponding mechanical properties. The macroscopic strength domain is aligned with experimental data, and shows moderate deviation with respect to the Hashin criterion, especially in equi-biaxial tension conditions.

Abstract

As both were observed to fail under tension due to the formation of cracks, a brittle cracking material model was used for both phases of the ply. Periodic boundary conditions were applied to simulate the presence of other RVEs in the surroundings, and inplane tension analysis were run. The results provide insight into the mechanism of failure at the micro-scale, and highlight the influence that the geometry of the fibers has on the macroscopic strength of the ply. The macroscopic strength domain is aligned with experimental data, and shows moderate deviation with respect to the Hashin criterion, especially in equi-biaxial tension conditions.
