Nowadays in Italy, economic mechanisms increasingly based on free market principles are exerting an ever greater influence on the transformation of living spaces. Homes are increasingly seen as investments rather than use value assets, while the decision-making processes that regulate the transformation of urban spaces are increasingly concentrated in the hands of an economic and political elite, that holds the main economic resources. These dynamics call into question access to housing and urban spaces for an ever-growing population, representing an obstacle to the exercise of their rights. In this sense, Catania represents a case study characterized by several critical issues related to the recent touristification that is affecting the historic centre, orienting it towards a process of gentrification. In particular, in the Montevergine district, characterized by the presence of three dismissed hospital complexes undergoing regeneration, attention has been focused on tourism and the university, neglecting the needs of the district’s inhabitants. The project therefore aims to propose a possible response to this imbalance, which is already partially affecting Montevergine and is destined to increase over the years, through a new model of collective and individual living space. The proposal, which deviate from the traditional idea of the home as private property and an independent housing unit, and of public space as an element aimed to promote tourism in the city, pursues the goal of returning a portion of urban space to the inhabitants.

Abstract
The proposal, which deviate from the traditional idea of the home as private property and an independent housing unit, and of public space as an element aimed to promote tourism in the city, pursues the goal of returning a portion of urban space to the inhabitants.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
