This research analyzes the expansion of the Olivetti company in Brazil, focusing on the architect Giancarlo Palanti as a key interpreter of the corporate philosophy within the South American context. Starting from the Olivettian concept of the factory as a “community” and a civil organism, the study examines the company’s approach across the American continent, with a specific emphasis on Brazil. It highlights the founding of OISA (1952) and the subsequent shift of its operational center from Rio de Janeiro to the industrial metropolis of São Paulo. The core of the work lies in the analysis of Palanti’s professional trajectory: from his Rationalist training in Milan and collaborations with Albini and Pagano, to the design maturity achieved in Brazil. The study explores his role in defining Olivetti’s visual identity through the design of showrooms and offices that merged Italian industrial rigor with local material culture (fine woods, straw, and leather). Supported by extensive documentary and historiographical evidence, the research culminates in a catalogue of works based on original drawings from the FAU USP archives. Ultimately, the Olivetti-Palanti case emerges as a perfect synthesis of industrial humanism and Brazilian modernism, where commercial space is transformed into a cultural manifesto and a bridge between two continents.
La ricerca analizza l’espansione della società Olivetti in Brasile, focalizzandosi sulla figura dell’architetto Giancarlo Palanti come interprete chiave della filosofia aziendale nel contesto sudamericano. Partendo dal concetto olivettiano di fabbrica come "comunità" e organismo civile, lo studio esamina l’approccio dell’azienda nel continente americano, e in particolare in Brasile. La fondazione della OISA (1952) e il successivo trasferimento del baricentro operativo da Rio de Janeiro alla metropoli industriale di San Paolo Il fulcro del lavoro risiede nell'analisi della traiettoria professionale di Palanti: dalla formazione razionalista a Milano e le collaborazioni con Albini e Pagano, fino alla maturità progettuale raggiunta in Brasile. Viene approfondito il suo ruolo nel definire l'identità visiva di Olivetti attraverso la progettazione di showroom e uffici, capaci di fondere il rigore industriale italiano con la cultura materiale locale (legni pregiati, paglia, cuoio). La ricerca si avvale di un importante apparato documentale e storiografico, culminando in un catalogo di opere basato sui disegni originali dell’archivio FAU USP. In definitiva, il caso Olivetti-Palanti emerge come una sintesi perfetta tra umanesimo industriale e modernismo brasiliano, dove lo spazio commerciale si trasforma in manifesto culturale e ponte tra due continenti.
