In-transit customer order cancellations on the Europe-Asia corridor create a time-critical challenge for consumer electronics enterprises. In this context, goods are already moving, production costs are sunk, and demurrage charges accumulate hourly upon arrival. Despite the financial and operational severity of these situations, academic and practitioner literature offers limited guidance addressing this specific phenomenon. This thesis examines Supply Chain Redirection (SCR), defined as the organizational capability to detect, authorize, and execute the rapid redistribution of in-transit goods from cancelled orders to alternative buyers or channels. Drawing on a single-case study with semi-structured interviews of six industry practitioners, functioning across Sales, Planning, Logistics, Warehouse, Finance, and Technology, the research reveals a paradox: while digital tools provide strong visibility into cancellations, execution frequently stalls because governance structures fail to support rapid decision-making. The core finding is a “Constrained Dynamic Capability”: while digital tools enable rapid sensing of in-transit cancellations, the organization’s decision rights, approval workflows, and governance routines do not move at the same speed. As a result, the seizing and reconfiguring elements remain structurally constrained, and potential redirections are often delayed or not executed. By mapping the realized four-phase redirection process (Detection, Matching, Authorization, and Execution), the research identifies consistent delays and structural bottlenecks. The thesis concludes that effective SCR requires more than improved dashboards, depending on pre-authorized governance structures that align decision authority with the compressed timescales of in-transit redirection.
Le cancellazioni degli ordini dei clienti quando la merce è già in transito lungo il corridoio Europa-Asia creano una sfida time-critical per le imprese di elettronica di consumo. In questo contesto, le merci sono già in movimento, i costi di produzione sono costi ormai sostenuti (sunk), e le spese di demurrage si accumulano di ora in ora all’arrivo. Nonostante la severità finanziaria e operativa di queste situazioni, la letteratura accademica e professionale offre indicazioni limitate che affrontino questo fenomeno specifico. Questa tesi esamina la Supply Chain Redirection (SCR), definita come la capacità organizzativa di rilevare, autorizzare ed eseguire la rapida riallocazione di merci in transito da ordini cancellati verso acquirenti alternativi o canali alternativi. Basandosi su un caso di studio singolo con interviste semi-strutturate a sei professionisti del settore, operanti nelle funzioni di Vendite, Pianificazione, Logistica, Magazzino, Finanza e Tecnologia, la ricerca evidenzia un paradosso: sebbene gli strumenti digitali offrano un’elevata visibilità sulle cancellazioni, l’esecuzione spesso si blocca perché le strutture di governance non supportano un processo decisionale rapido. Il risultato principale è una “Capacità Dinamica Vincolata”: mentre gli strumenti digitali consentono un sensing rapido delle cancellazioni in transito, i diritti decisionali dell’organizzazione, i flussi di approvazione e le routine di governance non si muovono alla stessa velocità. Di conseguenza, gli elementi di seizing e reconfiguring restano strutturalmente vincolati e le potenziali redirezioni vengono spesso ritardate o non eseguite. Mappando il processo di redirection effettivamente realizzato in quattro fasi (Rilevazione, Abbinamento, Autorizzazione ed Esecuzione), la ricerca identifica ritardi ricorrenti e colli di bottiglia strutturali. La tesi conclude che un SCR efficace richiede più di dashboard migliorate, dipendendo invece da strutture di governance pre-autorizzate che allineino l’autorità decisionale con le tempistiche compresse della redirezione di merci in transito.
