Enhancing ancient theaters: a proposal for the roman theater of Aspendos

This thesis examines the history of the Aspendos Ancient Theater in Antalya, Turkey, and the issue of contemporary intervention in the context of its current usage practices, proposing a solution to this issue. The continued active use of the ancient theater for cultural events requires new interventions in terms of the spatial organization and ergonomics of the service units. The aim of the study is to develop an approach to the redesign of the surrounding units with an artist pavilion that meets the need for a backdrop based on removable and lightweight structure principles without damaging the original architectural character of the historic building. Within this scope, methods such as literature reviews, examinations of conservation theories, site analyses by sketching and photography, interviews, and evaluations of existing interventions were employed. Questa tesi esamina la storia dell’Antico Teatro di Aspendos ad Antalya, in Turchia, e la questione dell’intervento contemporaneo nel contesto delle sue attuali pratiche d’uso, proponendo una soluzione a tale problematica. Il continuo utilizzo attivo del teatro antico per eventi culturali richiede nuovi interventi in termini di organizzazione spaziale ed ergonomia delle unità di servizio. L’obiettivo dello studio è sviluppare un approccio alla riprogettazione delle unità circostanti con un padiglione per artisti che soddisfi la necessità di un fondale, basato sui principi di strutture rimovibili e leggere, senza danneggiare il carattere architettonico originario dell’edificio storico. In questo ambito, sono stati impiegati metodi quali revisioni della letteratura, analisi delle teorie della conservazione, analisi del sito attraverso schizzi e fotografie, interviste e valutazioni degli interventi esistenti. Sulla base dei dati ottenuti, è stata sviluppata una proposta progettuale che abbraccia i principi di “respect, reflect, and reach” e mette in dialogo il linguaggio architettonico contemporaneo con il tessuto storico.
