Trama de azul and verde : designing and tracing the transition of Guimarães' riverscape

This essay explores the evolving relationship between the Portuguese city of Guimarães and the Couros River, which flows through the southern part of the historic centre in the Bairro C neighbourhood. This relationship has changed over the course of history: an initial detachment became industrial dependence, leading to the current tense coexistence characterised by canalisation and flooding problems. The thesis envisages a future reality in which the two elements, river and city, rediscover a balance that brings numerous benefits to human life, to the point where water supremacy over the built environment prevails. The common thread between past and future is represented by the leather tanning tanks, an element and monument that symbolises the city's industrial history.

Questa tesi indaga l’evolversi della relazione tra la città portoghese di Guimarães e il Corso Couros, un fiume che passa a sud del centro storico nel Bairro C. Questo rapporto cambia nel corso della storia: un iniziale distacco diventa una dipendenza industriale, fino all’attuale difficile coesistenza caratterizzata da canalizzazioni e problemi di inondazioni. L’elaborato concepisce una realtà futura in cui i due elementi, fiume e città, ritrovano un equilibrio che porta numerosi benefici alla vita dell’uomo fino a una supremazia dell’acqua sul costruito. Il filo rosso tra passato e futuro è rappresentato dalle vasche per la concia delle pelli, elemento e monumento simbolo della storia industriale della città.
