In the field of HCI, sociality is generally associated with strong ties. This thesis instead focuses on weak ties, lightweight, situational forms of interaction, and proposes a framework aimed at guiding the design of systems capable of fostering them. Drawing on Oldenburg’s theory of third places, Klinenberg’s concept of social infrastructure, and the decline of bridging social capital described by Putnam, the research explores how interactive communication systems can function as microsocial infrastructures: design devices operating in the intermediate space between people, media, and contexts, creating the minimal conditions for the emergence of weak social relationships. Seventy case studies were analyzed through three macro-categories: social activators, social network, and tools. Activators define the conditions that enable connections; the network describes their structure; and tools concern the technical and communicative means employed. The projects were also examined through the interpretative frameworks of Stepanova et al. and Ludvigsen. These projects differ from typical informal meeting services because they do not center interaction on individuals, but rather on lived experience. They are devices equipped with social mediators: they invite people to perform gestures, actions, and experiences that, incidentally, allow them to meet. A comparative analysis was then conducted through qualitative clustering of parameter co-occurrences. The cases were compared and grouped into five macro-clusters, each representing a mode of activating weak sociality: Shared Presence, Distributed Contribution, Collective Narrative, Environmental Relationship, and Direct Co-action. Finally, the model was tested on projects developed within the Systems for Interaction Laboratory of the Master’s Degree in Communication Design at Politecnico di Milano (a.y. 2023/2024 and 2024/2025), taught by Prof. Quaggiotto, in order to verify its applicability in design contexts different from those used to construct the framework.
