Abstract
Thanks to the huge availability of data in the aeronautical sector, combined with the increasing computational capabilities of modern computers, Machine Learning (ML) has become a transformative tool for aerospace engineering applications. This thesis presents a structured review of Machine Learning methodologies and their applications within the aeronautical field, in particular in the fields of Aerodynamic Modeling, Safety Analysis, Uncertainty Analysis, Air Traffic Controland Management, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and others. After a brief introduction on the fundaments of ML, the methods used, the work examines key computational models that are used in the reviewed articles. Their theoretical foundations are discussed to provide the necessary framework for understanding aeronautical applications. In Aerodynamic Modeling, ML models significantly reduce the computational burden associated with CFD simulations while maintaining acceptable accuracy. In Safety and Health and Usage Monitoring Systems (HUMS), data-driven anomaly detection methods demonstrate superior capability in identifying latent faults and operational risks compared to traditional threshold-based systems. ML approaches to Uncertainty Analysis improve computational efficiency in nonlinear structural and aerodynamic problems while preserving reliability. Applications in Maneuvering, Flight Phase Recognition, and Air Traffic Control show an enhanced trajectory prediction, fuel optimization, and Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) forecasting. Furthermore, UAV-related applications highlight the role of ML in autonomous navigation, swarm coordination, and energy management. Finally, various applications are reported, including some military oriented methods.
