This thesis investigates a way in which material reuse can become viable as architectural practice in Italy. Rather than approaching reuse as an environmental aspiration, the research examines it as a systemic question involving material flows, architectural questions, demolition practices, and regulations. The work is structured in two main books. Book 1, Disassembling Systems, maps reuse across Europe through a macro-analysis of 100 projects and develops a taxonomy of reuse strategies, from keeping only the structure to new construction with fully reused components. Five case studies are examined in depth to understand material sourcing, contractual structures, timelines, and the evolving role of the architect. This analysis reveals that reuse is beginning to thrive where networks, certification systems, and alternative economic models support it, and that it fundamentally reshapes architectural practice toward logistics, mediation, and material stewardship in manner that can be refered to as Metabolic Manuality. Book 2, Between Rubble and Regulation, shifts to the Italian context. It analyzes the abandonment landscape, demolition workflows, waste classification systems, and the legal journey of materials under Italian and European regulation. Here, reuse is seen as a regulatory challenge: materials on a deconstruction site are immediately classified legally as waste, limiting their architectural afterlife, and forcing waste treatment. The thesis culminates in an experimental project which proposes reuse as a preparation: identifying, stabilizing, and modifying components prior to demolition through a ‘restoration’, so they eventually can re-enter circulation. The thesis argues that the primary barrier to reuse in Italy is legal definition, and proposes a work-around through the reuse as preparation method. By working through large and minute scales demolition is reframed as an architectural act, and reuse as a logistical and business opportunity embedded within the existing construction system.
Questa tesi indaga un modo in cui il riuso dei materiali possa diventare fattibile come pratica architettonica in Italia. Piuttosto che affrontare il riuso come un’aspirazione ambientale, la ricerca lo esamina come una questione sistemica che coinvolge l’economia dello studio, i flussi di materiali, la demolizione e la regolamentazione. Il lavoro è strutturato in due libri. Il Libro 1, Disassembling Systems, mappa il riuso in Europa con una macro-analisi di 100 progetti e sviluppa una tassonomia delle strategie di riuso, dalla conservazione della struttura alla nuova costruzione con riuso. Cinque casi studio sono esaminati in profondità per comprendere l’approvvigionamento dei materiali, le strutture contrattuali, le tempistiche e l’evoluzione dell’architetto. Quest’analisi rivela che il riuso sta iniziando a prosperare dove reti, sistemi di certificazione e modelli economici alternativi lo supportano, e che ridefinisce fondamentalmente la pratica architettonica verso la logistica, la mediazione e la gestione dei materiali in un modo che può essere definito come Manualità Metabolica. Il Libro 2, Between Rubble and Regulation, si sposta sul contesto italiano. Analizza il paesaggio dell’abbandono, la practica di demolizione, i sistemi di classificazione dei rifiuti e il percorso legale dei materiali secondo la normativa italiana ed europea. Qui, il riuso è visto come una sfida normativa: i materiali su un cantiere di decostruzione sono classificati legalmente come rifiuti, imponendo il trattamento e limitando la loro vita. La tesi si conclude con un progetto sperimentale che propone il riuso come preparazione: identificare, stabilizzare e modificare i componenti prima della demolizione attraverso un ‘restauro’, così che possano eventualmente rientrare in circolazione. La tesi sostiene che la barriera principale al riuso in Italia è la definizione legale, e propone la soluzione alternativa de il riuso come preparazione. Lavorando attraverso scale grandi e minute, la demolizione viene ridefinita come un atto architettonico, e il riuso come un’opportunità logistica e commerciale incorporata dentro al sistema costruttivo esistente.
