This thesis explores the adaptive reuse of the Abbey of Santa Maria del Piano in Pozzaglia Sabina, Italy, an abandoned Romanesque monastic complex located within a rural landscape associated with the Cammino di San Benedetto pilgrimage route. Based on research into the territorial context, historical development, and existing architectural conditions of the site, the project proposes the transformation of the complex into a meditation center and a small-scale destination for pilgrims, hikers, and cyclists. The design approach does not aim to reconstruct the lost historical form but instead preserves the ruinous condition as an essential architectural quality. Lightweight contemporary interventions are introduced to re-establish spatial relationships and circulation systems of the former monastery while maintaining a clear distinction between old and new. Through geometric and proportional derivation from the existing fabric, new elements are generated in response to the characteristics of the ruins. By integrating minimal architectural intervention with historical continuity, the project seeks to reactivate the cultural and experiential value of the site while supporting contemporary patterns of slow tourism and pilgrimage use.
Questa tesi esplora il riuso adattivo dell’Abbazia di Santa Maria del Piano a Pozzaglia Sabina, Italia, un complesso monastico romanico abbandonato situato in un paesaggio rurale associato al percorso di pellegrinaggio del Cammino di San Benedetto. Sulla base di ricerche riguardanti il contesto territoriale, lo sviluppo storico e le condizioni architettoniche esistenti del sito, il progetto propone la trasformazione del complesso in un centro di meditazione e in una piccola destinazione per pellegrini, escursionisti e ciclisti. L’approccio progettuale non mira alla ricostruzione della forma storica perduta, ma conserva invece la condizione di rovina come qualità architettonica essenziale. Interventi contemporanei leggeri vengono introdotti per ristabilire le relazioni spaziali e i sistemi di circolazione dell’antico monastero, mantenendo una chiara distinzione tra antico e nuovo. Attraverso una derivazione geometrica e proporzionale dal tessuto esistente, i nuovi elementi vengono generati in risposta alle caratteristiche delle rovine. Integrando un intervento architettonico minimo con la continuità storica, il progetto mira a riattivare il valore culturale ed esperienziale del sito, supportando al contempo modelli contemporanei di turismo lento e uso pellegrinale.
