Abstract

The presented thesis focuses on the analysis of electric motors, with particular attention to their cooling systems that enhance performances and ensure their safe operation. To guarantee a clear understanding, a step-by-step approach has been adopted Chapter 1 of the thesis introduces the structure and operating principles of the syn chronous electric machine, with a specific focus on two particular types: the Externally Excited Synchronous Motor (EESM) and the Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM). Chapter 2, which constitutes the core of the thesis, aims to present the state of the art of cooling systems for electric motors, distinguishing and comparing the solutions currently available on the market, with particular emphasis on liquid cooling systems. Chapter 3 is devoted to analyze a case study conducted by the University of Padova, involving the design of a powertrain for electric heavy vehicles. The analysis was carried out using ANSYS MotorCAD software, useful both for modeling the selected motor and for performing electromagnetic and thermal simulations of the overall system. Chapter 4 exposes a summary of the obtained results and some considerations on emer ging trends, highlighting the most promising and sustainable solutions for the future.
