This work aims to explain how teams materialize ideas through framing activities when addressing complex, ambiguous challenges. According to literature when teams face novelty, ambiguity, and “wicked” conditions, their first obstacle is often a lack of orientation, thus a difficulty in establishing a shared understanding of what the situation is, what matters, and what to do first. To understand how teams frame complex challenges, materializing ideas into tangible outcomes this thesis integrates concepts from framing theory and design reframing, perspectives on artifacts, and emerging work on generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in innovation. Empirically, the study analyzes ten recorded team sessions from a Politecnico di Milano event (60 participants), where innovators from Italian companies were asked to rethink the future role of designers in an artificial intelligence-rich context and produce an interactive, persuasive presentation for a Human Resources decision-maker. Using the Gioia methodology, the thesis develops a grounded, team-level process model of framing ideas. The process model illustrates how an initial challenge progresses through two dimensions to achieve its materialization into a tangible form. The first dimension, Cognitive Materialization, encompasses Conceptual resonance and Dialectical synthesis activities, shaping and refining the challenge at a conceptual level, fostering the development of Shared awareness. This awareness then enables the transition into the second dimension, Artifact Materialization, composed of GenAI-mediated prototyping and Strategic output realization activities, translating the conceptual work into tangible outcomes. Finally, a Self instilling doubts mechanism continuously prompt reflection and revision, guiding the refinement and finalization of the final artifact. A first contribution is that in team settings materialization is oriented towards resonance, producing an artifact that can withstand the evaluative logics of an audience. This is kept internally coherent and externally defensible through a recursive endogenous quality-control mechanism, Self instilled doubt. Additionally, findings identify Shared awareness as a hinge mechanism, not automatic, in which common-ground principles are stabilized. It connects team-level framing to coordinated artifact materialization. In conclusion, how GenAI reshapes framing and team materialization, highlighting its role, as a cognitive partner and as a rapid drafting engine. It introduces a layer of collective governance labeled as framing the GenAI’s contribution within the team’s goals.
Questo lavoro mira a spiegare come i team materializzino le idee attraverso attività di framing nell’affrontare sfide complesse e ambigue. Secondo la letteratura, quando i team si confrontano con novità, ambiguità e condizioni “wicked”, il primo ostacolo è spesso la mancanza di orientamento, ossia la difficoltà di stabilire una comprensione condivisa di che cosa stia accadendo, di che cosa conti e da dove iniziare. Per comprendere come i team inquadrino (frame) le sfide complesse e materializzino le idee in esiti tangibili, questa tesi integra concetti provenienti dalla teoria del framing e dal design reframing, prospettive sugli artefatti e contributi emergenti sull’intelligenza artificiale generativa (GenAI) nei processi di innovazione. Sul piano empirico, lo studio analizza dieci sessioni di lavoro di team registrate durante un evento del Politecnico di Milano (60 partecipanti), in cui innovatori provenienti da aziende italiane sono stati chiamati a ripensare il ruolo futuro dei designer in un contesto ad alta intensità di intelligenza artificiale e a produrre una presentazione interattiva e persuasiva rivolta a un responsabile delle risorse umane. Attraverso la metodologia Gioia, la tesi sviluppa un modello di processo empiricamente fondato, a livello di team, relativo al framing delle idee. Il modello di processo illustra come una sfida iniziale evolva lungo due dimensioni fino alla sua materializzazione in una forma tangibile. La prima dimensione, Cognitive Materialization, comprende le attività di Conceptual resonance e Dialectical synthesis, che strutturano e raffinano la sfida a livello concettuale, favorendo lo sviluppo di una Shared awareness. Tale consapevolezza abilita la transizione verso la seconda dimensione, Artifact Materialization, composta dalle attività di GenAI-mediated prototyping e Strategic output realization, che traducono il lavoro concettuale in risultati tangibili. Infine, un meccanismo di Self instilling doubts sollecita continuamente riflessione e revisione, guidando il perfezionamento e la finalizzazione dell’artefatto. Un primo contributo evidenzia che, nei contesti di team, la materializzazione è orientata alla risonanza, producendo un artefatto capace di reggere le logiche valutative di un’audience. Tale esito viene mantenuto internamente coerente ed esternamente difendibile attraverso un meccanismo ricorsivo endogeno di controllo della qualità, Self instilling doubts. Inoltre, i risultati identificano Shared awareness come un meccanismo-cerniera non automatico, attraverso cui vengono stabilizzati principi di base comuni. Essa connette il framing a livello di team alla materializzazione coordinata dell’artefatto. Infine, la tesi chiarisce come la GenAI rimodelli il framing e la materializzazione nei team, evidenziandone il ruolo sia come partner cognitivo sia come motore di redazione rapida. La GenAI introduce inoltre un livello di governance collettiva, definito come framing del contributo della GenAI rispetto agli obiettivi del team.
