The increasing integration of non-programmable renewable energy sources has made the management of power grid balancing increasingly complex. In the Italian context, a major shift has occurred regarding the management and economic valuation of grid balancing resources, creating new opportunities for market operators to exploit their flexibility. In this new scenario, driven by the introduction of the TIDE reform (Testo Integrato del Dispacciamento Elettrico), having an accurate, real-time forecast of the imbalance price becomes therefore relevant for optimizing market strategies. This work aims to develop and compare different models for the near real-time forecasting of imbalance prices in the Italian electricity market. To this end, five algorithms have been implemented and compared: Lasso Estimated AutoRegressive (LEAR), Random Forest (RF), eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), Support Vector Regression (SVR), and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM). The experimental results demonstrate that XGBoost achieves the highest accuracy with a MAE of 43.77 €/MWh and an sMAPE of 43.57%. Meanwhile, Random Forest proves to be the most effective in managing price volatility, achieving the best RMSE of 65.91 €/MWh and an R2 of 0.39. Finally, all implemented models would allow market operators to significantly increase profitability by making intentional imbalances based on price forecasts, a practice that remains strictly prohibited by Italian market regulations.
A tal fine, sono stati implementati e confrontati cinque algoritmi: Lasso Estimated AutoRegressive (LEAR), Random Forest (RF), eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), Support Vector Regression (SVR) e Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM).

Abstract
Finally, all implemented models would allow market operators to significantly increase profitability by making intentional imbalances based on price forecasts, a practice that remains strictly prohibited by Italian market regulations.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
