This thesis investigates the tensions that run through shared design activity between designers and engineers, debunking the presumed ontological opposition between the two disciplines and taking as its object the ongoing practices and the dynamics that orient their course of action. Starting from a semiotic reformulation of the research problem, design and engineering are framed as complex design practices, internal to socio-technical configurations in which actors, objects, criteria of validity, value regimes, and situated constraints co-produce the meaning of the project. From this perspective, the tensive dynamic is treated as a structural category of meaning, understood as a state of instability in the course of action produced by the interference among different praxic logics and regulated through accommodations; tension, in turn, is considered as the phenomenal emergence of the effects produced by this dynamic, and is therefore not to be understood as a synonym for conflict, friction, or disagreement. The theoretical framework is grounded in Jacques Fontanille’s semiotics of practices and, in particular, in the notions of the practical scene and the resolution sequence (involving the succession of gaps in meaning, schematization, regulation, and accommodation), adopted here as the descriptive key to the tensive dynamic. On the empirical plane, the research adopts a qualitative design articulated into two complementary phases: a situated mini-ethnography of the laboratory reviews of 12 mixed teams from the Design & Engineering programme at Politecnico di Milano, engaged in a corporate brief, and a subsequent series of semi-structured, episodically oriented interviews with two comparatively selected groups. The analysis shows how the review functions as a privileged practical scene for making tensive dynamics observable, insofar as it publicly re-problematizes the project, tests its provisional robustness, and forces the team to reposition itself with respect to constraints and priorities. Conflictual effects recur under conditions such as the opening of gaps in meaning, the instability of evidence and mediating objects, methodological misalignments, asymmetries of role and recognition, axiological trade-offs, and extra-project interference. The most theoretically relevant result is that such effects cannot be reduced to the designer-versus-engineer dichotomy and, more often, take shape as local outcomes of a tensive dynamic that traverses dense practical scenes, in which a plurality of actors, objects, strategies, pathemic states, and values intervene.
Questa tesi indaga le tensioni che attraversano la progettazione condivisa tra designer e ingegneri, smentendo la presunta opposizione ontologica tra le due discipline e assumendo come oggetto le pratiche in atto e le dinamiche che ne orientano il corso d’azione. A partire da una riformulazione semiotica del problema di ricerca, design e ingegneria vengono inquadrati come pratiche progettuali complesse, interne a configurazioni socio-tecniche in cui attori, oggetti, criteri di validità, regimi di valore e vincoli situati co-producono il senso del progetto. In questa prospettiva, la dinamica tensiva viene trattata come categoria strutturale del senso, intesa come uno stato di instabilità del corso d’azione prodotto dall’interferenza tra differenti logiche prassiche e regolato tramite accomodamenti, e la tensione viene considerata come emersione fenomenica degli effetti prodotti da questa dinamica, non da intendersi quindi come sinonimo di conflitto, frizione o disaccordo. L’impianto teorico si fonda sulla semiotica delle pratiche di Jacques Fontanille e, in particolare, sulla nozione di scena pratica e sulla sequenza di risoluzione (che vede il susseguirsi di lacuna di senso, schematizzazione, regolazione, accomodamento) assunta qui come chiave descrittiva della dinamica tensiva. Sul piano empirico, la ricerca adotta un disegno qualitativo articolato in due momenti complementari: una mini-etnografia situata delle revisioni laboratoriali di 12 team misti del corso di Design & Engineering del Politecnico di Milano, impegnati in un brief aziendale, e una successiva serie di interviste semistrutturate a orientamento episodico su due gruppi selezionati comparativamente. L’analisi mostra come la revisione funzioni come scena pratica privilegiata per rendere osservabili le dinamiche tensive, poiché ri-problematizza pubblicamente il progetto, ne verifica la tenuta provvisoria e costringe il team a riposizionarsi rispetto a vincoli e priorità. Gli effetti conflittuali emergono in modo ricorrente in corrispondenza di condizioni quali apertura di lacune di senso, instabilità delle prove e degli oggetti mediatori, disallineamenti di metodo, asimmetrie di ruolo e riconoscimento, trade-off assiologici e interferenze extraprogettuali. Il risultato teoricamente più rilevante è che tali effetti non si lasciano ridurre alla dicotomia designer vs ingegnere, e più spesso si configurano come esiti locali di una dinamica tensiva che attraversa scene pratiche dense, nelle quali intervengono una pluralità di attori, oggetti, strategie, patemi e valori.
