Abstract
The longstanding history of tuna fishing has significantly influenced the Mediterranean’s economy and coastal identity, transforming from a feudal noble privilege into a crucial cultural foundation. The Tonnara della Seggiola in Pizzo, Calabria, is a site of national importance, historically second only to the Favignana trap in Sicily. This once-exclusive supplier to the Royal House of Savoy features an iconic complex, including the onshore ‘Loggia’ processing facility and a complex marine net trap, currently in a state of significant material deterioration and neglect. This thesis proposes the adaptive reuse of the Tonnara della Seggiola, converting its dilapidated remnants into a mixed cultural and hospitality facility. Entitled ‘La Tonnara,’ the initiative contests the inflexible classifications of cultural laboratories and hotels to establish a ‘architecture of the in-between.’ Instead of removing what remains of history, the architectural intervention treats the ruin as a palimpsest, adding a new occupied roof that integrates fragmented volumes while maintaining the site’s authentic character and historical significance. The program incorporates a maritime craftlab for the conservation of traditional seafaring skills, a culinary workshop focused on artisanal tuna preparation, and elegant belvedere suites located in the historic wings. The proposal functions as a transitional place between Pizzo’s upper town and the sea, where creation, hospitality, and heritage coexist. “La Tonnara” aims to revitalize a neglected coastal area, illustrating how architecture can support cultural creation and preserve Calabria’s maritime identity for future communal consciousness.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
