This thesis develops a criteria-based comparative framework for assessing Digital Product Passport (DPP) solution providers in the emerging European regulatory context shaped by the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR). The study addresses a practical and academic gap: while DPP research widely discusses regulatory goals, system design, and implementation challenges, it offers limited support for comparing commercially available provider solutions in a structured way. The research applies a mapping-oriented comparative approach based on three evidence streams: provider-relevant expectations derived from Regulation (EU) 2024/1781, provider-oriented expectations synthesized from academic literature, and publicly available provider disclosures. Using secondary data, the study reviews ESPR provisions, analyzes 31 DPP-focused academic publications, and maps public disclosures from a cleaned dataset of 56 commercially active providers. Regulation- and literature-derived criteria are first developed independently, then aligned and integrated into a final analytical framework, which is subsequently used to assess the coverage of provider disclosures and comparative patterns. The findings show that the regulatory baseline defines a clear provider expectation space centered on data management and interoperability, governance, compliance, and security, and user-facing access, while the literature expands this baseline toward broader implementation, system architecture, lifecycle, and circularity capabilities. The integrated framework shows that meaningful provider assessment extends beyond compliance-only requirements. The provider-side analysis further shows that public disclosures are unevenly distributed: providers most consistently communicate identification, traceability, interoperability claims, and user-facing access features, while governance structures, long-term assurance conditions, and governance- and assurance-related expectations are disclosed less consistently. Overall, the thesis provides a transparent analytical basis for comparing DPP provider solution approaches while clarifying the interpretation limits of public disclosure-based evidence.
Questa tesi sviluppa un quadro comparativo basato su criteri per valutare i fornitori di soluzioni Digital Product Passport (DPP) nel contesto normativo europeo emergente definito dal Regolamento sulla progettazione ecocompatibile dei prodotti sostenibili (ESPR). Lo studio affronta un gap pratico e accademico: sebbene la ricerca sui DPP discuta ampiamente obiettivi normativi, progettazione dei sistemi e sfide di implementazione, offre un supporto limitato per confrontare in modo strutturato le soluzioni dei fornitori disponibili sul mercato. La ricerca applica un approccio comparativo orientato al mapping basato su tre flussi di evidenza: aspettative rilevanti per i fornitori derivate dal Regolamento (UE) 2024/1781, aspettative orientate ai fornitori sintetizzate dalla letteratura accademica e disclosure pubblicamente disponibili dei fornitori. Utilizzando dati secondari, lo studio esamina le disposizioni dell’ESPR, analizza 31 pubblicazioni accademiche focalizzate sui DPP e mappa le disclosure pubbliche di un dataset ripulito di 56 fornitori commercialmente attivi. I criteri derivati dal regolamento e quelli derivati dalla letteratura vengono prima sviluppati in modo indipendente, poi allineati e integrati in un quadro analitico finale, che viene successivamente utilizzato per valutare la copertura delle disclosure dei fornitori e i pattern comparativi. I risultati mostrano che la baseline normativa definisce uno spazio di aspettative chiaro per i fornitori, centrato su gestione dei dati e interoperabilità, governance, conformità e sicurezza, e accesso lato utente, mentre la letteratura amplia questa baseline verso capacità più ampie di implementazione, architettura di sistema, ciclo di vita e circolarità. Il quadro integrato mostra che una valutazione significativa dei fornitori va oltre i soli requisiti di conformità. L’analisi lato fornitori mostra inoltre che le disclosure pubbliche sono distribuite in modo non uniforme: i fornitori comunicano con maggiore coerenza identificazione, tracciabilità, dichiarazioni di interoperabilità e funzionalità di accesso lato utente, mentre strutture di governance, condizioni di garanzia a lungo termine e aspettative legate alla governance e alla garanzia sono divulgate con minore coerenza. Nel complesso, la tesi fornisce una base analitica trasparente per confrontare gli approcci di soluzione dei fornitori DPP, chiarendo al contempo i limiti interpretativi delle evidenze basate su disclosure pubbliche.
