This thesis investigates the destinies and vocations of the Hamburg port area, focusing on the complex relationship between the city’s historical fabric and its productive infrastructure. The study centers primarily on the banks of the Elbe River—a landscape characterized by a monumental and dynamic scale, defined by mobile structures, cranes, gantry cranes, and the incessant transit of large ships. Starting from an analysis of historical and cultural transformations, the research highlights how the port has been, from its origins to the present day, not only the economic engine of the Hanseatic city but the primary generator of its urban morphology. The analysis extends beyond the waterfront, reconstructing the network of relationships linking the port area to the St. Pauli district and the green belt that ascends through the city to the university district: an urban continuum developed in close dependence on maritime dynamics. The objective of the thesis is the development of a design proposal that interprets these stratifications, overcoming the dichotomy between industry and city. It proposes rethinking the edge of the productive area no longer exclusively as a logistical hub, but as a driver for social aggregation and livability, drawing on the model of functional hybridization typical of the Fischmarkt. The project intends to restore coherence to the context, transforming the area into a new interface capable of engaging with both industrial memory and the need for new public spaces for the community.
