Heat pump integration into distillation processes is an important industrial decarbonization solution. However, compressor reliability can be compromised by liquid droplets (wet compression), especially when modern refrigerants characterized by a re-entrant saturation curve in the T-s diagram are used. This thesis proposes an alternative, the Modified Rankine (MR) loop, to replace the conventional configuration with an internal heat exchanger (IHX), evaluating its thermodynamic performance and techno-economic aspects. The MR loop eliminates the need for IHX by mixing the working refrigerant with a non-volatile ionic liquid (IL) directly in the evaporator. By exploiting the ebullioscopic elevation (BPE) induced by the ionic liquid, the proposed cycle intrinsically ensures superheated vapor at the compressor intake. The study presents a thermodynamic comparison and investigates the integration of the configurations in a methanol-water distillation column, using the low-GWP refrigerant R-1233zd(E) and the Cyphos IL 104® ionic liquid. The results confirm the thermodynamic feasibility of both architectures in providing the required superheat. However, in the MR cycle, compliance with the pinch point imposes a reduction of the evaporating pressure, leading to a significant performance penalty (COP equal to 3.85, compared with 5.16 for the IHX cycle). The techno-economic analysis shows that heat pump configurations require higher costs than the steam-driven column, with an increase in the Total Annualized Cost (TAC) of 14% for the IHX configuration and 50% for the MR cycle. Sensitivity analysis confirms that although the MR cycle provides an intrinsic safety mechanism that enhances compressor reliability, its industrial competitiveness is limited by the actual high operative and capital expenditures, driven by the larger heat exchange areas required and the higher mechanical work demanded by the compressor.
