The contemporary design industry today faces complex structural challenges: rigid supply chains, an unsustainable environmental impact linked to overstocking, and extremely high barriers to entry for emerging talent. On the one hand, independent designers struggle to industrialize and monetize their ideas without incurring significant financial risks or suffering intellectual property theft. On the other hand, traditional brands need agile and flexible tools to test new market trends without risking being left with unsold stock. At the same time, design lovers are increasingly looking for unique, customizable, and ethically transparent products, few of which exist in the standardized market or are inaccessible in the luxury design market. This thesis presents Pleom, a hybrid platform based on on-demand digital manufacturing designed to revolutionize the approach to the production and distribution processes of design products. Through the methodological application of strategic design, the project develops a scalable business model structured on two fronts: direct-to-consumer (D2C) and business-to-business-to-consumer (B2B2C). In the D2C model, Pleom acts as a technological enabler for designers, offering an infrastructure that manages the entire process following the design phase: from the optimization of designs for digital manufacturing to logistics and marketing. This allows creatives to access a wide sales network through a fair revenue sharing system, while consumers gain access to exclusive, sustainable, and customizable design items at affordable prices. In the B2B2C model, the platform positions itself as a strategic partner for manufacturing brands by offering open innovation and bridge manufacturing services. Through curated open calls and on-demand production without stock, brands can validate new ideas while reducing inventory risk and integrating sustainable solutions to ensure maximum supply chain transparency. Pleom goes beyond the concept of a simple supplier to establish itself as a strategic partner capable of accelerating the transition to a circular economy. By leveraging the flexibility of digital manufacturing and the use of bio-based materials, the project demonstrates how it is possible to democratize mass customization, eliminate waste, and create a fair ecosystem in which creativity responds efficiently to real market demand.
L’industria del design contemporaneo oggi si trova ad affrontare sfide strutturali complesse: filiere rigide, un impatto ambientale insostenibile legato all’overstocking e barriere d’ingresso estremamente elevate per i talenti emergenti. Da un lato, i designer indipendenti faticano a industrializzare e monetizzare le loro idee senza incorrere in grandi rischi finanziari o subire furti di proprietà intellettuale. Dall’altro, i brand tradizionali necessitano di strumenti agili e flessibili per testare nuovi trend di mercato senza rischiare di rimanere con stock invenduto. Parallelamente, i design lovers ricercano sempre più prodotti unici, personalizzabili e trasparenti dal punto di vista etico, di cui ne esistono pochi nel mercato standardizzato o sono inaccessibili in quello del design di lusso. Questa tesi presenta Pleom, una piattaforma ibrida basata sulla manifattura digitale on-demand progettata per rivoluzionare l’approccio ai processi di produzione e distribuzione di prodotti di design. Attraverso l'applicazione metodologica del design strategico, il progetto sviluppa un modello di business scalabile strutturato su due fronti: direct-to-consumer (D2C) e business-to-business-to-consumer (B2B2C). Nel modello D2C, Pleom agisce come abilitatore tecnologico per i designer, offrendo un’infrastruttura che gestisce l’intero processo che segue la progettazione: dall’ottimizzazione dei design per la digital manufacturing fino alla logistica e al marketing. Questo permette ai creativi di accedere a un’ampia rete di vendita tramite un sistema di revenue sharing equo, mentre i consumatori accedono a oggetti di design esclusivi, sostenibili e personalizzabili a prezzi democratici. Nel modello B2B2C, la piattaforma si posiziona come partner strategico per i brand manifatturieri offrendo servizi di open innovation e bridge manufacturing. Tramite open call curate e la produzione on-demand senza stock, i brand possono validare nuove idee abbattendo il rischio d'inventario e integrando soluzioni sostenibili per garantire la massima trasparenza della filiera. Pleom supera il concetto di semplice fornitore per affermarsi come partner strategico in grado di accelerare la transizione verso un'economia circolare. Sfruttando la flessibilità della digital manufacturing e l'utilizzo di materiali bio-based, il progetto dimostra come sia possibile democratizzare la mass customization, azzerare gli sprechi e creare un ecosistema equo in cui la creatività risponde in modo efficiente alla reale domanda del mercato.
