Il piano sospeso: riutilizzo della copertura come pratica di riscatto dello spazio pubblico

Since the earliest buildings, the roof has been a highly symbolic as well as practical feature, linked to the concept of a threshold, an interlude between two parts: it is suspended between heaven and earth, between intimacy and community, between the built and the imagined. It is precisely this ambivalence between technical and closing element and poetic place that makes the roof space fertile ground for new forms of urban relationship and appropriation. In a context of increasing land saturation, the thesis explores the roof as a latent topography of the contemporary city: a horizontal plane capable of hosting shared experiences and restoring new dimensions of proximity and perspective to the established fabric. The work intertwines theoretical reflection and design experimentation, investigating how the roof, a space that is both invisible and everyday, can take on an active role in the construction of new socialities. Interpreting the roof as a place of suspended urbanity, where architecture operates by removing constraints and adding space, suggesting alternative ways of inhabiting the boundary, the design intervention is therefore intended as an act of reactivation which, operating at the level of the horizon, reconfigures distance as a renewed form of relationship between the individual, architecture and the urban landscape.

Fin dai primi edifici, il tetto è stato portatore di una presenza fortemente simbolica, oltre che pratica, riconducibile alla dimensione della soglia, di intermezzo tra due parti: esso è sospeso tra cielo e terra, tra intimità e collettività, tra il costruito e l’immaginato. È proprio questa ambivalenza tra elemento tecnico e di chiusura e luogo poetico, che rende lo spazio della copertura terreno fertile per nuove forme di relazione e appropriazione urbana. In un contesto di crescente saturazione del suolo, la tesi esplora il tetto come topografia latente della città contemporanea: un piano orizzontale capace di ospitare esperienze condivise e di restituire al tessuto consolidato nuove dimensioni di prossimità e sguardo. Il lavoro intreccia riflessione teorica e sperimentazione progettuale, indagando come il tetto, spazio al tempo stesso invisibile e quotidiano, possa assumere un ruolo attivo nella costruzione di nuove socialità. Interpretando quindi il tetto come il luogo di una urbanità sospesa, dove l’architettura opera per sottrazione di vincoli e addizione di spazio, suggerendo modi alternativi di abitare il limite, l’intervento progettuale vuole essere dunque un atto di riattivazione che, operando alla quota dell’orizzonte, riconfigura la distanza come forma rinnovata di relazione tra individuo, architettura e paesaggio urbano.
