Quanto è presente il passato? Il progetto per le Ex Carceri Mandamentali di Bobbio

The thesis “How Present Is the Past? The Project for the Former District Jail of Bobbio” develops an original and coherent knowledge base for the former jail building, part of the San Colombano complex, which is currently disused and therefore closed off from the city. The aim is twofold: on the one hand, to reconstruct, through a combined historical-critical and technical approach, the identity of the building and its layered transformations; on the other, to outline a restoration and adaptive-reuse intent capable of returning to the community a place that, by its location and role, has always been connected to urban life. Within this perspective, the associated open spaces are also significant, understood as a public resource that is presently unused yet potentially decisive for the quality of use and for the relationship between the building and the urban fabric. The work is structured into three integrated steps. The historical reconstruction, based on bibliographic and archival sources, clarifies changes in use and the main building phases, highlighting both continuities and ruptures between the monastic complex’s service areas and the later custodial function. The survey represents the most substantial contribution: in the absence of reliable and detailed graphic documentation, a complete as-built documentation is produced, capable of recording geometric irregularities, construction discontinuities, and traces of modifications over time. On this basis, the diagnostic assessment is developed through material and constructive readings, systematic room-by-room documentation, decay mapping, and the identification of conservation and usability criticalities, thus building an operational framework of priorities and intervention criteria. From this knowledge phase derives the design intent: a compatible, legible, and carefully calibrated restoration, aimed at reopening the building and reactivating it socially. The reuse theme is also anchored in a contemporary value: the jail as a setting and protagonist of an auteur film, in dialogue with Bobbio’s strong cinematic vocation, offering an additional cultural framework for its refunctionalization. The proposal therefore directs the building toward a hybrid and adaptable cultural and multifunctional center, able to host activities related to cinema and education, meeting spaces and small exhibitions, and functions connected to the local craft tradition, transforming an urban void into a civic infrastructure.

La tesi “Quanto è presente il passato? Il progetto per le Ex Carceri Mandamentali di Bobbio” costruisce una base conoscitiva organica e inedita per l’edificio delle ex carceri, parte del complesso di San Colombano, oggi in disuso e quindi precluso alla città. L’obiettivo è duplice: da un lato ricomporre, con metodo storico-critico e tecnico, l’identità del manufatto e le sue stratificazioni; dall’altro orientare un’intenzione di restauro e riuso capace di restituire alla comunità un luogo che, per posizione e ruolo, ha sempre dialogato con la vita urbana. In questa prospettiva assumono rilievo anche gli spazi aperti di pertinenza intesi come risorsa pubblica oggi inutilizzata, ma potenzialmente decisiva per la qualità d’uso e per la relazione tra edificio e tessuto cittadino. Il lavoro si articola in tre passaggi integrati. La ricostruzione storica, fondata su fonti bibliografiche e archivistiche, chiarisce trasformazioni d’uso e principali fasi edilizie, evidenziando continuità e rotture tra le pertinenze del complesso monastico e la successiva destinazione detentiva. Il rilievo costituisce il contributo più rilevante: in assenza di una documentazione grafica attendibile e dettagliata, viene prodotta una restituzione completa dello stato di fatto, capace di registrare irregolarità geometriche, disomogeneità costruttive e tracce di modifiche nel tempo. Su questa base si sviluppa la diagnosi, tramite letture materiche e costruttive, schedatura sistematica degli ambienti, mappatura dei degradi e individuazione delle criticità conservative e d’uso, costruendo un quadro operativo per priorità e criteri d’intervento. Dalla fase conoscitiva deriva l’intenzione progettuale: un restauro compatibile, riconoscibile e misurato, finalizzato alla riapertura e alla riattivazione sociale dell’edificio. Il tema del riuso si innesta anche su un valore contemporaneo: le carceri come scenario e protagonista di un film d’autore, in dialogo con la vocazione cinematografica di Bobbio, offrendo un ulteriore ancoraggio culturale per la rifunzionalizzazione. La proposta orienta quindi l’edificio verso un centro culturale e polifunzionale, ibrido e adattabile, capace di ospitare attività legate al cinema e alla formazione, spazi di incontro e piccole esposizioni, e funzioni connesse alla tradizione artigianale locale, trasformando un vuoto in infrastruttura civica.
