The aim of the thesis is to explore creative potential within action contexts where disciplinary norms do not guide inquiry. The term off-disciplinary is understood as the set of approaches that reject disciplinary boundaries as a premise. It is argued that design is out-of-place: both misplaced and inappropriate. It is misplaced since it does not have a stable and univocal object of study, and inappropriate since this characteristic can subvert the disciplinary norms of other fields. The central thesis is that the formalization of approaches is inadequate in an out-of-place discipline such as design. It is further argued that the Laboratory’s design processes are out-of-phase, meaning that the phases of exploration and realization overlap and are interdependent. These hypotheses are discussed through the use of a purpose-built software tool for the progressive tracing of design processes. The work is structured around a discussion of non-strictly disciplinary approaches; it continues through a series of conversation-interviews with designers engaged in professional and self-initiated practices; and it concludes by examining the practice of the Final Synthesis Studio, within the Communication Design program at the Politecnico di Milano, as a device for discussing design approaches and processes.

Abstract
The work is structured around a discussion of non-strictly disciplinary approaches; it continues through a series of conversation-interviews with designers engaged in professional and self-initiated practices; and it concludes by examining the practice of the Final Synthesis Studio, within the Communication Design program at the Politecnico di Milano, as a device for discussing design approaches and processes.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
