The increasing integration of environmental sustainability principles into infrastructure design, and in particular road infrastructure, strengthened by D.Lgs 36/2023 and the D.M. 5 Agosto 2024 introducing the Minimum Environmental Criteria (CAM strade), has established the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology as a key tool for the objective evaluation of environmental performance throughout the entire life cycle of an infrastructure. This thesis develops a methodological and application framework for the life cycle assessment of road pavements, with particular reference to rehabilitation interventions. The first part of the work presents a comprehensive state-of-the-art review, examining the relevant regulatory and technical references, the main methodological challenges, the different approaches to Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) modelling, and the implications of the various life cycle phases. Particular attention is also devoted to the potential use of recycled materials within a circular economy perspective. In the second part of the thesis, the LCA methodological framework is applied to a real airport rehabilitation case study, through the modelling of different intervention types planned for the runway and taxiways. The analysis includes all end-of-life phases (C1–C4) and all production and construction phases (A1–A5), quantifying environmental impacts and comparing the different design solutions both in absolute terms and normalized with respect to the defined functional unit, equal to 1 m² of pavement. The results show that the material production phase represents the dominant contribution to greenhouse gas emissions in terms of Global Warming Potential (GWP), while impacts normalized to the functional unit are strongly influenced by the intervention depth and by the structural configuration of the pavement system. The study demonstrates that the LCA approach, when properly structured and integrated into the technical design process, constitutes an effective decision-support tool for guiding technical choices toward lower environmental impact solutions, in line with ecological transition objectives and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
