In recent years, anxiety and panic attacks have gained increasing relevance within the broader discourse on mental health, emerging as widespread and cross-generational phenomena. At the same time, the wellness market has introduced numerous digital devices aimed at emotional regulation, often characterized by continuous monitoring, data quantification, and integration within complex technological ecosystems. However, such solutions may conflict with the cognitive conditions associated with acute anxiety states, in which attentional resources and decision-making capacities are temporarily reduced. This thesis operates at the intersection of psychology and design, investigating how a physical object can support emotional regulation during moments of anxiety without positioning itself as a medical device or introducing performance-oriented logics. Through a theoretical analysis of the cognitive and physiological mechanisms underlying anxiety, and a comparative evaluation of existing devices—categorized into breathing tools, mindfulness systems, and stress-relief objects—key design gaps are identified: excessive operational complexity, reliance on data quantification, limited social discretion, and insufficient integration between guided breathing and embodied interaction. Building on these findings, the research develops a tangible system centered on immediate interaction, single-hand use, non-invasive sensory feedback, and the absence of data tracking. The proposed design integrates guided breathing with tactile grounding, placing materiality and operational simplicity at the core of the user experience. The thesis demonstrates how design can function not as a therapeutic substitute, but as a discreet, everyday support for emotional regulation, contributing to more accessible, socially acceptable, and context-sensitive tools for managing anxiety in real-life situations.
Negli ultimi anni l’ansia e gli attacchi di panico hanno assunto una crescente rilevanza nel panorama della salute mentale, configurandosi come fenomeni diffusi e trasversali rispetto a età e contesto socio-culturale. Parallelamente, il mercato del benessere ha visto l’emergere di numerosi dispositivi digitali orientati alla regolazione emotiva, spesso caratterizzati da monitoraggio costante, quantificazione dei parametri fisiologici e integrazione in ecosistemi tecnologici complessi. Tuttavia, tali soluzioni possono risultare in tensione con le condizioni psicologiche proprie degli stati ansiosi acuti, in cui la capacità cognitiva e decisionale risulta temporaneamente ridotta. La presente tesi si colloca all’intersezione tra psicologia e design, con l’obiettivo di indagare come un oggetto fisico possa supportare la regolazione emotiva in situazioni di attivazione ansiosa, senza configurarsi come dispositivo medicale né introdurre logiche prestazionali. Attraverso un’analisi teorica dei meccanismi cognitivi e fisiologici dell’ansia e un confronto comparativo tra dispositivi esistenti — suddivisi in tecniche di respirazione, sistemi di mindfulness e oggetti antistress — vengono individuati i principali gap progettuali: eccessiva complessità operativa, centralità della quantificazione, scarsa discrezione formale e ridotta integrazione tra guida respiratoria e fisicità. A partire da tali criticità, la ricerca sviluppa un sistema oggettuale centrato su interazione immediata, uso con una sola mano, feedback sensoriale non invasivo e assenza di monitoraggio dati. Il progetto propone un equilibrio tra guida respiratoria e grounding tattile, ponendo la materialità e la semplicità operativa al centro dell’esperienza. La tesi dimostra come il design possa intervenire non come dispositivo terapeutico, ma come supporto discreto e quotidiano alla regolazione emotiva, contribuendo alla costruzione di strumenti più accessibili, accettabili e coerenti con le condizioni reali di vulnerabilità psicologica.
