It is clear that today's cities are characterised by uncertainty, complexity, unpredictability and multidimensional stress factors (Moroni, 2022; Fernández-Güell, 2024). Traditional planning approaches focus on offering solutions in urban planning and design to protect urban systems from these negative factors, but they still remain inadequate in some respects. Valuable approaches such as resilience aim to protect the system against this stress and facilitate recovery, but this ‘recovery’-focused approach may not guarantee that cities will develop for the better in an environment of uncertainty (Davoudi, 2012). The concept of antifragility, proposed by Nassim N. Taleb (2012), comes into play at this point and suggests viewing the negativities faced by systems not as threats but as opportunities and going beyond resilience. In this context, this thesis aims to clarify the conceptual distinction between resilience and antifragility by examining the place of the concept of antifragility in the literature and the areas in which it is used, to define the concept in detail, to translate it to the scale of urban design, and to develop design principles. The main research question is: ‘What are the fundamental principles and parameters that define an antifragile approach to urban design? According to these principles, which contemporary urban design project is the most antifragile today?’ The research begins with an interdisciplinary literature review and analogical reasoning; findings from the literature are transformed into design principles, measurable indicators are developed for each principle, and a scoring matrix is created using these indicators. The developed matrix is applied to contemporary urban design projects selected according to specific criteria, and a comparative analysis is performed using both quantitative scoring and qualitative justification. The synthesis of these analyses results in the selection of today's most antifragile project. Finally, this thesis aims to provide a evaluation tool that will form a basis for future work in the context of urban design, bridge the gap between antifragile theory and practice, and develop recommendations for designing cities that are better prepared for the future, fuelled by uncertainties.
È evidente che le città odierne sono caratterizzate da incertezza, complessità, imprevedibilità e fattori di stress multidimensionali (Moroni, 2022; Fernández-Güell, 2024). Gli approcci tradizionali alla pianificazione si concentrano sull'offerta di soluzioni nell'ambito dell'urbanistica e della progettazione per proteggere i sistemi urbani da questi fattori negativi, ma rimangono ancora inadeguati sotto alcuni aspetti. Approcci validi come la resilienza mirano a proteggere il sistema da questi stress e a facilitare la ripresa, ma questo approccio incentrato sulla “ripresa” potrebbe non garantire che le città si sviluppino in modo positivo in un contesto di incertezza (Davoudi, 2012). Il concetto di antifragilità, proposto da Nassim N. Taleb (2012), entra in gioco a questo punto e suggerisce di considerare le avversità affrontate dai sistemi non come minacce ma come opportunità e di andare oltre la resilienza. In questo contesto, la presente tesi mira a chiarire la distinzione concettuale tra resilienza e antifragilità esaminando il ruolo del concetto di antifragilità nella letteratura e le aree in cui viene utilizzato, per definire il concetto in dettaglio, tradurlo nella scala della progettazione urbana e sviluppare principi di progettazione. La domanda di ricerca principale è: "Quali sono i principi e i parametri fondamentali che definiscono un approccio antifragile alla progettazione urbana? In base a questi principi, quale progetto urbano contemporaneo è oggi il più antifragile? La ricerca inizia con una revisione interdisciplinare della letteratura e un ragionamento analogico; i risultati della letteratura vengono trasformati in principi di progettazione, vengono sviluppati indicatori misurabili per ciascun principio e viene creata una matrice di punteggio utilizzando questi indicatori. La matrice sviluppata viene applicata a progetti urbani contemporanei selezionati in base a criteri specifici e viene eseguita un'analisi comparativa utilizzando sia il punteggio quantitativo che la giustificazione qualitativa. La sintesi di queste analisi porta alla selezione del progetto più antifragile di oggi. Infine, questa tesi mira a fornire uno strumento di valutazione che costituirà la base per il lavoro futuro nel contesto della progettazione urbana, colmerà il divario tra teoria e pratica antifragile e svilupperà raccomandazioni per progettare città meglio preparate per il futuro, alimentate dalle incertezze.
