This research stems from reflections on the precarious state of independent Italian publishing—an ecosystem characterized by economic fragility and, above all, a lack of critical infrastructure capable of documenting and legitimizing its design value. Despite the sector's productive fertility, the absence of an organic interpretative structure and the fragmentation of current visibility mechanisms compromise its historical memory and cultural recognition. In response to this scenario, this work investigates how communication design can contribute to the enhancement and preservation of independent publishing practices, recognizing the book as a complex artifact. The ultimate goal of the research is to demonstrate that design can act beyond the form of the object by designing the symbolic systems that regulate its legitimation. The methodological path develops along two complementary tracks. The theoretical-analytical level initially reconstructs the landscape of Italian independent publishing to bring its concrete needs to light. Subsequently, it delves into the role of curation and cultural preservation devices (archives, exhibitions, catalogs, digital platforms, diffused diaries, social channels) as tools for transforming the book into cultural heritage. This survey culminates in a comparative analysis of major book design awards, examined as apparatuses capable of unifying recognition and preservation. The critical synthesis of the potentials and limitations of existing models forms the basis for the design phase, which results in the definition of an operational framework for an award dedicated to national independent publishing—conceived as a complex cultural device integrating specific evaluation criteria, communication strategies, and operational protocols. The research demonstrates how, through communication design, it is possible to design systems of recognition that are not limited to episodic celebration, but rather to the protection and narration of the practices they intend to promote. In the context of independent publishing, communication design becomes a tool capable of making the value of the book-object legible, ensuring a shared memory and securing its persistence over time. From this perspective, the research expands the scope of communication design: beyond the design of the form and content of individual outputs, the discipline is investigated here as a practice capable of structuring complex and integrated cultural systems.

Abstract
From this perspective, the research expands the scope of communication design: beyond the design of the form and content of individual outputs, the discipline is investigated here as a practice capable of structuring complex and integrated cultural systems.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
