Abstract This dissertation investigates how architectural design can be collectively produced in the era of digital transformation, focusing on the interplay between participatory design principles, online communities, and decentralised technological infrastructures. While participation in architecture has traditionally been framed as spatial co-production or user involvement, this study reconceptualises it as a multi-dimensional process mediated through information infrastructures, platform logics, and institutional negotiations. By examining how digital platforms both enable and constrain collective authorship, the research interrogates the shifting roles of architects, the redistribution of design agency, and the governance mechanisms shaping collaborative production. The study develops a Situated Participatory Design Framework through comparative analysis of four core case studies: WikiHouse, which advances open-source construction and modular co-production; Assemble, which embeds design within community-led governance structures; Urban–Think Tank, which integrates GIS-based participatory planning in informal settlements; and Hybrid Space Lab, which deploys modular and game-based tools for urban co-creation. These are complemented by investigations into emerging practices such as Red Note’s Open City Project and platform-mediated urban village regeneration in China, illustrating how participation unfolds across diverse sociotechnical contexts. Drawing on architecture, media studies, and science and technology studies (STS), the framework synthesises findings into a five-stage model: (1) issue identification, (2) platform construction, (3) content infill, (4) institutional negotiation, and (5) iterative evolution. This model accounts for both procedural dimensions—collaboration workflows, authorship negotiations, governance structures—and spatial consequences, highlighting how digital mediation transforms the production, distribution, and appropriation of architectural space. Theoretical contributions include redefining platforms as scaffolding for participation, reframing the architect’s role from form-giver to mechanism designer and governance mediator, and embedding AI, open-source logic, and DAO-based governance into participatory design discourse. Methodologically, the research adopts a hybrid approach integrating fieldwork, platform observation, interface analysis, and design-led experimentation, enabling both empirical depth and theoretical generalisation. By articulating the spatial, technological, and institutional dimensions of platform-mediated participation, the dissertation advances scholarly understanding of collaborative architecture in the digital age. It offers strategic insights for architects, policymakers, and communities seeking to design more equitable, adaptive, and resilient forms of spatial production, foregrounding participation not as an isolated technique, but as an evolving socio-technical assemblage.
Abstract Questa tesi indaga come la progettazione architettonica possa essere prodotta collettivamente nell'era della trasformazione digitale, concentrandosi sull'interazione tra principi di progettazione partecipativa, comunità online e infrastrutture tecnologiche decentralizzate. Mentre la partecipazione in architettura è stata tradizionalmente inquadrata come co-produzione spaziale o coinvolgimento dell'utente, questo studio la riconcettualizza come un processo multidimensionale mediato da infrastrutture informative, logiche di piattaforma e negoziazioni istituzionali. Esaminando come le piattaforme digitali consentano e limitino la paternità collettiva, la ricerca analizza i ruoli mutevoli degli architetti, la ridistribuzione dell'agency progettuale e i meccanismi di governance che plasmano la produzione collaborativa. Lo studio sviluppa un quadro di riferimento per la progettazione partecipativa situata attraverso un'analisi comparativa di quattro casi studio principali: WikiHouse, che promuove la costruzione open-source e la co-produzione modulare; Assemble, che integra la progettazione all'interno di strutture di governance guidate dalla comunità; Urban-Think Tank, che integra la pianificazione partecipativa basata su GIS negli insediamenti informali; e Hybrid Space Lab, che utilizza strumenti modulari e basati sul gioco per la co-creazione urbana. Questi studi sono integrati da indagini su pratiche emergenti come l'Open City Project di Red Note e la rigenerazione urbana di villaggi mediata da piattaforme in Cina, illustrando come la partecipazione si sviluppi in diversi contesti sociotecnici. Attingendo all'architettura, agli studi sui media e agli studi sulla scienza e la tecnologia (STS), il quadro teorico sintetizza i risultati in un modello a cinque fasi: (1) identificazione del problema, (2) costruzione della piattaforma, (3) inserimento dei contenuti, (4) negoziazione istituzionale e (5) evoluzione iterativa. Questo modello tiene conto sia delle dimensioni procedurali – flussi di lavoro collaborativi, negoziazioni sulla paternità, strutture di governance – sia delle conseguenze spaziali, evidenziando come la mediazione digitale trasformi la produzione, la distribuzione e l'appropriazione dello spazio architettonico. I contributi teorici includono la ridefinizione delle piattaforme come impalcature per la partecipazione, la riformulazione del ruolo dell'architetto da creatore di forme a progettista di meccanismi e mediatore di governance, e l'integrazione di intelligenza artificiale, logica open source e governance basata su DAO nel discorso sulla progettazione partecipativa. Dal punto di vista metodologico, la ricerca adotta un approccio ibrido che integra lavoro sul campo, osservazione delle piattaforme, analisi delle interfacce e sperimentazione progettuale, consentendo sia una profonda analisi empirica che una generalizzazione teorica. Articolando le dimensioni spaziali, tecnologiche e istituzionali della partecipazione mediata dalle piattaforme, la tesi di dottorato contribuisce alla comprensione accademica dell'architettura collaborativa nell'era digitale. Offre spunti strategici per architetti, decisori politici e comunità che desiderano progettare forme di produzione spaziale più eque, adattive e resilienti, ponendo la partecipazione non come una tecnica isolata, ma come un insieme socio-tecnico in continua evoluzione.
