Sustainable servitization emerges as a promising industrial paradigm defined as a continuous transformation to achieve sustainability through the introduction and enhancement of services, leading to increased product longevity, closed resource loops, intensified usage, and resource efficiency. Nonetheless, while the relevance of the phenomenon is recognized by literature and practice, a clear understanding of the mechanisms affecting, hindering, and facilitating the transition is missing, as well as operational tools to support manufacturers’ transformation. The research objective of this doctoral thesis is “to support manufacturing companies in pursuing sustainable servitization”. Particularly, the thesis aims to identify and investigate mechanisms affecting the transition, characterize critical capabilities, and develop and test an operational tool to support the assessment of manufacturers’ maturity. The thesis meets the research objective by applying multiple methodologies, coherently to the specific research questions: qualitative investigation with practitioners’ interactions, systematic literature reviews, and de Bruin method for maturity model development. The thesis investigates the mechanisms influencing sustainable servitization, identifying, from a diverse and practice-based perspective, 3 main drivers, 4 challenges, and 5 enablers. It further expands knowledge on enablers by investigating the role of digital servitization to deploy sustainable services in manufacturing. It identifies and characterizes 11 critical capabilities, expanding and systematizing current understanding. Finally, it develops, validates, and deploys a maturity model to assess manufacturers' maturity in sustainable servitization. The thesis contributes to theory by proposing a clearer understanding of sustainable servitization, investigating critical factors, capabilities, affecting mechanisms, and proposing a dedicated maturity model. The thesis also offers contributions to practitioners and policymakers. It proposes actionable insights for practitioners involved in the transition, which can also be leveraged by policymakers to design targeted activities addressing systemic barriers. Finally, the proposed maturity model can be leveraged for the identification of areas to be strengthened and support informed decision-making.
La servitizzazione sostenibile emerge come un promettente paradigma industriale definito come la continua trasformazione orientata ad ottenere la sostenibilità tramite l’introduzione e il rafforzamento dei servizi, portando a un aumento della longevità dei prodotti, al riutilizzo dei materiali, all’intensificazione dell’utilizzo dei beni e all’aumento dell’efficienza. Nonostante questo, anche se il fenomeno è considerato rilevante sia dalla letteratura che dalla pratica, manca una chiara comprensione dei meccanismi che influenzano, complicano e facilitano la transizione, così come strumenti operativi per supportare l’industria manifatturiera nella trasformazione. L’obiettivo di questa tesi di dottorato è "supportare le aziende manifatturiere nel perseguire la servitizzazione sostenibile”. In particolare, la tesi vuole identificare e investigare i meccanismi che influenzano la transizione, caratterizzare le capabilities critiche e sviluppare e testare uno strumento operativo per supportare la valutazione della maturità aziendale. La tesi risponde all’obiettivo di ricerca applicando molteplici metodologie, coerentemente con le domande di ricerca specifiche: investigazione qualitativa tramite interazione con esperti, analisi sistematiche della letteratura e la metodologia di de Bruin per lo sviluppo dei modelli di maturità. La tesi investiga i meccanismi che influenzano la servitizzazione sostenibile, identificando, tramite una diversificata prospettiva industriale, 3 driver, 4 sfide e 5 abilitatori. Espande questi risultati analizzando il ruolo della servitizzazione digitale per implementare servizi sostenibili nell’ambito manifatturiero. La tesi identifica e caratterizza 11 capabilities critiche, sistematizzando ed espandendo l’attuale comprensione del fenomeno. Infine, viene sviluppato, validato e applicato un modello di maturità per valutare le aziende manifatturiere in relazione alla servitizzazione sostenibile. I contributi teorici della tesi sono relativi all’elaborazione di una più chiara comprensione della servitizzazione sostenibile, tramite l’identificazione di fattori critici, capabilities, meccanismi impattanti e tramite la proposta di un modello di maturità dedicato. La tesi offre contributi anche all’industria e ai policymaker. Propone, per gli industriali coinvolti nella transizione, spunti pratici che possono essere utilizzati anche dai responsabili politici per progettare attività mirate ad affrontare le barriere sistemiche. Infine, il modello di maturità proposto può essere sfruttato per identificare le aree aziendali da rafforzare e per supportare un processo decisionale informato per l’implementazione di strategie di servitizzazione sostenibile.
