Knowledge workers' perceptions of generative AI in the workplace: a Q Methodology study

The adoption of GenAI has increased significantly in recent years and will be an important trend in the coming years. This study investigates the use of GenAI in the workplace by professionals, providing insights into the views of knowledge workers who use this technology for daily work tasks. By applying Q methodology, we identified two existing perspectives: the Responsible Pragmatist, characterized by a strong sense of responsibility and conditional trust in GenAI, and the Augmented Optimist, more focused on the performance improvements brought by GenAI and showing greater trust in the technology. Although they have different focuses when thinking about GenAI, the two perspectives converge in stating that ownership of the job remains with the professional, perceiving GenAI as an enhancement rather than a replacement. The results of this study can provide interesting hints for improvement and development for different actors, ranging from managers to AI developers, becoming practical implications of great value.

L’utilizzo della GenAI è aumentato significativamente negli ultimi anni e sarà una delle principali tendenze del prossimo futuro. Questo studio analizza l’uso della GenAI nel contesto lavorativo da parte dei professionisti, fornendo osservazioni riguardanti il punto di vista dei knowledge worker che utilizzano questa tecnologia nelle attività lavorative quotidiane. Applicando la metodologia Q, abbiamo identificato due prospettive esistenti: il Pragmatista Responsabile, contraddistinto da un forte senso di responsabilità e da una fiducia condizionata nella GenAI, e l’Ottimista Potenziato, maggiormente focalizzato sui miglioramenti delle prestazioni che la GenAI può apportare e caratterizzato da una maggiore fiducia nella tecnologia. Sebbene presentino diversi approcci nel concepire la GenAI, le due prospettive convergono nell’affermare che la responsabilità del lavoro resta del professionista, percependo la GenAI come uno strumento di supporto piuttosto che come un sostituto. I risultati di questo studio possono fornire interessanti spunti di miglioramento e sviluppo per diversi attori, dai manager agli sviluppatori di AI, traducendosi in implicazioni pratiche di grande valore.
