Youth apartments are a type of centralised long-term rental apartment that has been rapidly developing in China in recent years. Youth apartments have become a popular rental option for the growing number of new-generation migrants in their working cities in China. Young people living in youth apartments have lost the direct support of their families and friends as they leave their hometowns to live and work in other cities. Moreover, most tenants in the same youth apartment do not know each other and lack mutual trust, resulting in not much social interaction among them. Therefore, tenants have unmet social needs. On the other hand, youth apartment brands mainly provide tenants with functional "resting and sleeping spaces" rather than a "home", which cannot meet the social needs of tenants. As the space where tenants spend the most time daily other than their workplace, youth apartments have the potential to provide social interaction opportunities for tenants. However, the development period of youth apartments in China is relatively short, and the number of related studies is small. Current studies on youth apartments mainly focus on the architectural renovation, design of the private rooms, and public spaces of youth apartments. Few studies focus on the convivial atmosphere of youth apartments. Therefore, this study addresses the following research question: How can service design be applied to transform function-oriented youth apartments into spaces that foster a convivial atmosphere and respond to tenants’ social needs? This study aims to understand the current situation of youth apartments in China and the lifestyles, needs and pain points of users, and ultimately serve to design a service that fosters a convivial atmosphere in youth apartments. The research begins with a literature study to review the current studies on youth apartments in China. At the same time, the research summarizes the current situation of youth apartments using participatory observation. By studying literature about conviviality, the author clarifies the definition of conviviality, its relationship with social interaction, and the strategies for forming a convivial atmosphere that this study can draw on. Meanwhile, the author further studies these strategies by conducting case studies. After that, the study combines in-depth interviews with users and diary studies to create the persona of this study. Based on this, the author defines the potential features of the service through two co-design workshops with users and two brainstorming sessions with designers. Finally, the author develops the design strategy and designs the "Acting Youth" service concept and touchpoints. The study expects to inspire future youth apartment research from the perspective of "conviviality". At the same time, the insights from the study on the current situation of youth apartments and the tenant personas can help practitioners understand youth apartments and their users. The service design opportunities, strategies and concrete solutions can serve as potential development directions for future youth apartment practice.
