The push for more efficient, compact aero-engines has renewed interest in transonic compressors, where intrusive probes distort the very shock structure they are meant to measure. Background-Oriented Schlieren (BOS) offers a non-intrusive alternative, but its signal responds to the density gradient, not the density itself: any uniform shift leaves it unchanged, so the absolute density level remains undetermined, a null-space indeterminacy inherent to the technique. This thesis develops and validates a Unified BOS/Physics-Informed Neural Network framework (UBOS/PINN) that embeds the BOS measurement operator and the compressible Euler equations in a single differentiable optimisation problem, inferring the density field from a single BOS image pair together with a minimal set of supplemental measurements. It asks which minimal subset of measurable information lifts the indeterminacy when the full inlet boundary condition is unavailable. Validation uses a synthetic compressible Rankine vortex with known closed-form solution, through three models of decreasing reliance on synthetic boundary information: Model~1, with ideal ground-truth anchoring; Model~2, the conceptual core, constrained only by a total-temperature field and by sparse static-pressure taps; and Model~3, a gauge-invariant formulation isolating the optical gradient alone. Model~2 suggests that the information content of the measurable set {T_0, p_s,k} (an inlet total temperature and a few static-pressure taps), combined with the isentropic EOS closure, is in principle sufficient to lift this indeterminacy. On the validation case an adaptive weighting heuristic (AWH) recovers the absolute density level to a relative L_2 error of order 10^-3, whereas the purely measurable fixed-weight configuration leaves a substantially larger residual offset. A fully unsupervised, measurable-only pipeline therefore remains to be demonstrated. By contrast, the optical channel alone (Model~3) constrains only the gradient structure of the reconstructed field, reaching a relative L_2 error of order 10^-2 on the density gradient and thereby locating the boundary between optical measurement and thermodynamic inference. A dedicated ablation on the shared training strategy further shows that the BOS-weighted importance sampler improves the gradient-channel accuracy by more than an order of magnitude relative to uniform sampling. Because the synthetic Rankine vortex is smooth, subsonic and shock-free, it does not exercise the flow discontinuities of the target transonic regime; verification on a case containing shocks is deferred to future work.

Abstract
Because the synthetic Rankine vortex is smooth, subsonic and shock-free, it does not exercise the flow discontinuities of the target transonic regime; verification on a case containing shocks is deferred to future work.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
