Abstract

For the assessment of the risk associated with landslides characterized by high propagation velocities, it is essential to understand the mechanical behaviour of granular materials. These materials may behave either as solids or as granular gases. In the former case, energy is stored exclusively in the form of elastic energy, whereas in the latter it is stored predominantly as granular agitation energy. Throughout this work, the term regime is used to refer to these different material states. The material exhibits either a solid or a collisional regime depending on its density, confinement, and deformation rate. Dense, highly confined materials subjected to low deformation rates tend to display predominantly solid-like (quasi-static) behaviour, whereas looser materials, under lower confinement and higher deformation rates, are characterized by a collisional regime. Starting from a critical analysis of the multi-regime constitutive model proposed by Prof. di Prisco and co-workers, a thermodynamic interpretation of these regimes is developed through the introduction of a dimensionless energetic variable, defined as the ratio between elastic energy and the total energy stored within the material (Σ). To investigate the mechanical behaviour of granular materials subjected to high deformation rates, Discrete Element Method (DEM) simulations of simple shear tests were performed under both constant-volume and constant-pressure conditions. The DEM results revealed a relationship between Σ and µ(where µ= τ/σn) as well as an analogous relationship between Σ and the norm of the fabric deviator, which characterizes the orientation of interparticle contacts. The results suggest that the previously mentioned constitutive model may be revised by replacing its current component inspired by the Extended Kinetic Theory (EKT) with a simpler formulation.
