What does it mean, today, to dwell? How can contemporary human beings still recognize themselves in the places they pass through, occupy and consume? What role can architecture assume in the face of a city that is increasingly accelerated and incapable of restoring meaning to the presence of the individual in the world? The thesis begins with a reflection on the original meaning of the term dwelling and on the need, today more than ever, to rediscover its most authentic dimension. Dwelling, in its deepest meaning, is not exhausted by the simple occupation of a space, but represents the act of establishing profound relationships with one’s surroundings: it means recognizing places, custodians of identity and memory, as a constitutive part of one’s own experience. This authentic dimension, however, clashes with the reality of the contemporary city, marked by hyper accelerated rhythms and productivist logics that tend to deny any form of rootedness. Territory, or rather the earth, is thus degraded to a surface of pure consumption, transit and ultra performance. From this fracture derives a collective disorientation, a widespread inability to dwell, which translates into a form of alienation and “territorial indifference”. It is precisely within this gap that the idea of refuge (refugium) is inserted: not understood as an isolationist escape or a purely emergency response, but as an architectural paradigm capable of stitching back together this urban tear, configuring itself as a device of pause, care and reactivation, and offering a concrete alternative where speed and transit dominate. To prevent this reflection from remaining confined to the theoretical level, the research constructs a critical and narrative Atlas. It is not configured as a static repertoire of models to be replicated, but rather as an open map of experiences, architectures and situations capable of exemplifying how the refuge can assume polyvalent and operative forms. Historical and contemporary cases, ordinary architectures, experiments and collective devices are brought into relation, not to construct a stylistic genealogy, but to identify a design posture. The Atlas, on the one hand, demonstrates that an alternative to the alienation of contemporary space exists and is already widely in action; on the other, it allows some recurring and effective attitudes to be recognized. The design phase, finally, finds an ideal field of investigation in one of the most ambiguous infrastructures of the contemporary city: the petrol station. A symbol of passage and consumption, it tells of a model in which space is destined to technical function more than to relation. With the progressive, even temporary, disuse of these service stations, empty plots and canopies remain suspended within the urban fabric. It is here that a critical and design possibility opens up: to transform places of transit into spaces of permanence, surfaces of consumption into occasions for encounter and relation, residual fragments into urban refuges. Where the city had given space over to the machine, the project gives space back to dwelling.
