This research investigates the evolution of the idea of the ruin in Western culture, analysing the transformations of its meaning from the Humanist period to the contemporary age. Taking the European context as its primary field of reference, the study reconstructs the formation of the modern perception of ruins, understood not only as material testimonies of the past, but also as cultural constructions through which each era interprets its own relationship with time, memory, and heritage. Beginning with the rediscovery of antiquity during Humanism and the Renaissance, continuing through the experience of the Grand Tour, Romantic thought, and the subsequent theoretical developments of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the ruin progressively acquired an increasingly complex aesthetic, symbolic, and identity-related dimension. At the same time, the very concept of the ruin expanded beyond the classical world to encompass the traces of modernity, in which unfinished spaces and urban fragments became new forms through which to interpret the transformations of contemporary society. Through an interdisciplinary approach that combines architectural history, heritage theory, aesthetics, philosophy, and the visual arts, this research examines the ruin as a privileged site for the production of meaning, capable of activating relationships between memory, imagination, and design. Viewed as a dynamic cultural form through which the present continues to question the past, the ruin becomes a space of negotiation between what endures and what changes, a device capable of generating new narratives and new ways of understanding heritage. Particular attention is devoted to contemporary heritage enhancement practices, in which art, architecture, exhibition design, and cultural events contribute to redefining the perception of historical and archaeological sites. Within this context, the world of fashion has also emerged as a significant field of investigation, having identified in ruins and historical heritage a powerful expressive and communicative language. Fashion shows, installations, and visual campaigns transform monuments and archaeological sites into narrative devices capable of establishing a dialogue between the ephemeral temporality of the event and the enduring duration of historical memory. The research ultimately demonstrates how, in contemporary culture, the ruin represents a cultural condition through which the present can be interpreted.

Abstract
The research ultimately demonstrates how, in contemporary culture, the ruin represents a cultural condition through which the present can be interpreted.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
