Tophane is one of the most historically significant coastal areas of Istanbul. It is located between the Bosphorus coastside and the hillside neighborhoods of Beyoglu. Throughout history, it has functioned as an important port, transportation hub, and cultural center. However, contemporary urban transformations, transportation infrastructure, tourism-focused developments, and topographical obstacles have weakened the relationship between the coastal strip and the upper neighborhoods. In the study area, there were lots of challenges related to accessibility, continuity of public spaces, and social integration. This thesis examines the fragmented relationship between the coastal strip and the hillside neighborhoods of Tophane. It shows how urban design strategies can strengthen social and ecological integration between these urban layers. Therefore, four critical points have been identified: Bogazkesen Street, Galataport Clock Tower Square, Enli Yokusu, and Gokkusagi Stairs. In this research, it was used some methodologies combining literature review, historical analysis, spatial mapping, field observations and comparative case study evaluation. A series of thematic maps were created to identify key challenges affecting the study area. According to the findings, the main problem is not only due to the lack of physical connections between the shoreline and the hilltop. It also results from limited accessibility, discontinuity of public space, inadequate ecological integration, and the dominance of transportation infrastructure. These conditions weaken pedestrian comfort, connection with the sea, and social interaction. The thesis proposes various urban design interventions to increase vertical accessibility, strengthen pedestrian connections, improve ecological networks, and ensure continuity of public space at selected points. The aim of the research is to create a more accessible, resilient, and integrated urban environment in Tophane by reconnecting the shoreline with the hilltop through socially inclusive, transportation-facilitating, and environmentally sensitive ecological strategies without altering the surrounding structures.

Tophane is one of the most historically significant coastal areas of Istanbul. It is located between the Bosphorus coastside and the hillside neighborhoods of Beyoglu. Throughout history, it has functioned as an important port, transportation hub, and cultural center.
