Work-related musculoskeletal disorders are source of concern for both workers and organizations due to severe health issues and productivity losses. Consequently, various preventive strategies have been developed. Among those, the use of occupational exoskeletons has emerged. A first purpose of this study is to evaluate MATE-XT (S.p.A. COMAU), a passive upper limb exoskeleton, during a repetitive overhead screwing task. The second purpose is the validation of the new developed markerless motor capture system (The Captury GmbH) used to evaluate the kinematics in previous task both while wearing the exoskeleton (Exo) and without it (NoExo). The study was conducted in Human performance laboratory in Politecnico di Milano over 12 healthy subjects. A muscle activity analysis was performed using surface electromyography (sEMG) probes positioned on upper limb and trunk muscle to assess the level of fatigue in Exo and NoExo. An additional kinematic analysis was conducted to determine the effect of the exoskeleton on the upper limb joint angles using an inertial measurement unit system (Xsens IMU). The same kinematic analysis was considered for comparison with the motion capture system. Regarding the exoskeleton evaluation, the kinematic analysis revealed a postural adaptation with increase of mean angle and range of motion indices for shoulder joints. A reduction in peak activation values was found in upper limb muscles resulting in a potential mitigation of fatigue. In the motion capture system analysis, similar trends were observed for upper limbs flexion-extension. However, significant variations were obtained in shoulder adduction-abduction. Further analyses are required to achieve a greater generalization of the results by increasing the number of subjects, to evaluate the effect of the exoskeleton over time, and to increase the tracking accuracy of the motion capture system.

Abstract
Further analyses are required to achieve a greater generalization of the results by increasing the number of subjects, to evaluate the effect of the exoskeleton over time, and to increase the tracking accuracy of the motion capture system.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
