This thesis purpose is to study the effect that humidity has on electronic nose systems in terms of their ability to identify organic compounds in a laboratory setting. Two different e-nose arrays with metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensors comprising both commercially available and PoliMi produced sensors were used to evaluate the impact of humidity on their ability to discriminate between different compounds (Hexanal, 4-Heptanone, and 2,3-Butanedione) for Array #1 or concentrations of Hexanal for Array #2 compared to control samples containing just air, with the tests being conducted at different levels of Relative Humidity (RH). The electrical signal produced was elaborated using R code and analyzed both via visual observation of the sensor resistance curves and the calculation of a selection of features that could be used to compare results using statistical tools such as sensitivity, repeatability and response time. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) using Cross-validation techniques and kmeans clustering was promising in both highlighting the effect of different levels of humidity on results and carrying out successful distinction between different samples in the majority of tests on both Arrays. Overall, considering the tests had some technical difficulties and were thus limited in repetitions, the results are quite promising for the technology and provide a solid foundation for additional testing.

Abstract
Overall, considering the tests had some technical difficulties and were thus limited in repetitions, the results are quite promising for the technology and provide a solid foundation for additional testing.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
