Echoes is an audiovisual research and experimentation project that investigates how cosmic data can be translated into sonic and visual experiences capable of conveying a perception of space. The thesis originates from the following question: is it possible to transform astronomical information into a sensory language through sound design and audio-reactive graphics? The project begins with pre-existing astronomical sonifications, which are reworked as compositional material. The process includes analytical listening, pitch discretization, the construction of MIDI sequences, the organization of materials into layers, and musical composition. Data translation remains the core of the tracks, while harmonic, timbral, and atmospheric elements support their legibility and continuity. The audiovisual EP consists of four case studies—Andromeda, Big Bang, Mice Galaxy, and Cassiopeia A—each developed according to different perceptual qualities: stratification, emergence, relationship, memory, energy, and dispersion. The tracks were subsequently transformed into audio-reactive prototypes in TouchDesigner, in which the sound signal controls movement, density, scale, brightness, and image persistence. The research shows that sonification can become a design tool capable of creating perceptual access to phenomena that cannot be directly experienced. Echoes does not reproduce an “authentic sound” of the universe; rather, it makes the designed nature of the translation explicit, transforming cosmic data into a coherent, immersive, and interpretable musical and visual form.

Abstract
Echoes does not reproduce an “authentic sound” of the universe; rather, it makes the designed nature of the translation explicit, transforming cosmic data into a coherent, immersive, and interpretable musical and visual form.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
