Water pollution caused by organic contaminants is a growing environmental challenge, increasing the need for sustainable wastewater treatment technologies. Among these pollutants, phenolic compounds are of special concern because of their toxicity, environmental persistence, and resistance to conventional biological treatments. Heterogeneous photocatalysis based on titanium dioxide (TiO2) has emerged as a promising solution for the mineralization of these contaminants. TiO2 is tipically used in nanoparticle form, however, its application is often limited by the recombination of charge carriers and the impossibility of recovery and reuse of nanoparticle suspensions. This work investigates the development and optimization of two different advanced TiO2-based photocatalysts for water purification: immonilized TI/TiO2 nanotube arrays produced by electrochemical anodization and carbon/TiO2 composite foams synthesized by a one step thermal synthesis process. Preliminary experiments using commercial TiO2 photocatalysts were conducted to establish the operating conditions for the photocatalytic tests and select phenol as the target pollutant. The materials were characterized using structural, morphological, and surface analyses. The photocatalytic activity of the materials was evaluated under UV and near UV/Vis irradiation: both materials showed effective phenol degradation, demonstrating the potential of both approaches for photocatalytic water treatment. The photocatalytic results of the nanotube arrays showed that both the geometry and the anodization process of the sample influence the photocatalytic activity. Carbon/TiO2 composite foams were prepared using either commercial P25 nanoparticles or Ti isopropoxide as TiO2 precursors. Although foams synthesized using P25 retained higher crystallinity, composites prepared through in situ TiO2 formation displayed comparable normalized photocatalytic activity, demonstrating the effectiveness of the one-step synthesis route.
