Rapid rural-to-urban migration following the Second World War led to the emergence of informal settlements, known as gecekondu, in major Turkish cities. Initially established as self-built housing to meet urgent shelter needs, these settlements evolved into socially cohesive communities characterized by strong neighbourhood ties, robust social networks, and distinctive spatial identities. At present, many gecekondu areas face urban transformation pressures that often result in displacement, weakened community relationships, and the erosion of local identity. This study investigates the potential of a landscape-based revitalization approach to facilitate the transformation of gecekondu neighbourhoods while preserving their social and spatial identities. The research focuses on the Yenisahra and Barbaros neighbourhoods in Ataşehir, Istanbul, selected due to their proximity to major transportation networks, the Istanbul Financial Center, and adjacent redevelopment zones, which subject the area to significant development pressure. The methodology combines literature review, analysis of interviews and secondary sources, field observations, aerial photograph interpretation, and spatial analyses using QGIS. These methods are employed to identify the physical, topographical, and socio-spatial characteristics that define the neighbourhoods’ existing character. The findings demonstrate that existing topography, informal circulation networks, open spaces, and community-oriented spatial practices serve as valuable resources for revitalization. Accordingly, a landscape-based design framework is proposed to re-evaluate physical and spatial characteristics, enhance residents’ quality of life, and strengthen public-space networks. The study adopts a holistic approach to reconnect fragmented spatial and social relationships between the neighbourhoods and adjacent luxury residential developments. In this context, the proposed framework preserves local identity and social continuity by reinterpreting the unique landscape character of gecekondu areas as a design resource, providing an alternative, place-based, and landscape-led guide for future urban transformation.

Abstract
In this context, the proposed framework preserves local identity and social continuity by reinterpreting the unique landscape character of gecekondu areas as a design resource, providing an alternative, place-based, and landscape-led guide for future urban transformation.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
